#1: Horrendous MPG from 206 GTI Author: GTIjim, Location: Lincoln PostPosted: Tue Dec 13, 2011 5:20 am
    ----
I've not had my 99k miles GTI long and its proving to be frustrating.....27mpg aint cool considering all of it's use comes from back roads and dual carriageways. It doesnt get a hard time, I think ive had it past 4000rpm a handful of times pulling onto the A1.

I've changed the fuel filter (and checked for leaks- none), used Forte injector cleaner and changed the air filter which wasnt particularly bad anyway. There are no fault codes stored in the memory.

So, could it be:

Lambda/o2?
Map Sensor?
Plugs?
Worn injectors?

The idle too is a little lumpy which is felt in the car and observed on the rev counter, nothing erratic but a gentle flicker either way.

Any thoughts?

Jim

You didnt say if its been serviced a good oil change and air filter , tyre presures? may help

27 isn't that bad, my current is 16mpg Embarassed

It was only a matter of time before someone 'piped up' with the old "you don't buy a gti for economy" comment, however, the combined figures are 35.something mpg. It isn't doing this which would lead me to believe there is a fault of sorts. I had asked about what sort of figures owners were getting before buying and the general opinion was that given my usage of the car 35mpg wasn't unrealistic.

I think you must have missed my description on how the car is being used. If it was being driven hard I'd gladly accept 27mpg but it isn't.

For those looking to stay 'on topic' keeping the discussion technical and avoid petulant comments, the tyre pressures are correct and checked weekly, I don't use supermarket fuel and the only modification is it's lowered.

Do Peugeot fit ECUs that 'learn' your driving style? Would disconnecting the battery for a set time reset the ECU?

Regards,
Jim

Just because Peugeot "say" thats the averege it doesnt mean its the average for you, its probably an average if you stay in 3rd gear at 60mph on a very long road.

In the real world you will get around 27mpg, another example is the RX8, Mazda say you can get around 26mpg but in reality your luck to get 18mpg Laughing

Just live with it or get rid of it.

35mpg that Peugeot tell you is at optimum air temperature, humidity, gear changes, acceleration, wind speed, etc.

Basically Lab conditions.

27mpg is fine.

The adaptive ecu is with regards of air flow, injection, and mechanical things, not the guy behind the wheel.

This is not your car....

Mine averages ~35 driving 'with traffic' on B roads. It drops off a fair amount when im doing motorway speeds probably because its pretty short geared.

Round the track my GTi averaged 16mpg.
I once had 40mpg traveling at 40mph for 20 miles with very low RPM and steady gear changes.

As others have said circa 30mpg is normal for day to day driving.

Doesnt sound "normal" if your driving like a saint. My 2001 GTi was very good on fuel, seemed to just sip fuel, 280 miles on a half tank was my best (sat at 70mph on motorway) even though I was going on holiday so a lot of extra weight in the car which wont have helped.

I have been averaging 34-38 mpg over 120 miles in my 180, that was driving like a saint, changing gear at no more than 3000 rpm and block shifting from 3rd gear to 5th a lot, with a couple of blasts up to 100 on a section of dual carrigeway with 6 roundabouts in between.

Used to get 27-29mpg average when I first got it, but price of fuel has slowed me down a lot.

Unbolt fuel rail.

Have a friend turn key to position 2 and check injectors.

on the 60mile round trip to my girlfriends, i got an avrage of 46.09mpg, which is a mixture between all types of roads including motoways.

and at this rmp and speed.

i got this

irregardless of what you do on them backroads are a killer for fuel economy

i drive on one quite a bit in my diesel and it decimates my MPG

you 180 might ahve gotten that but thats cause it was a 120mile stint on the motorway. I bet the gti wouldn't be far off the same MPG in the same circumstance

For every 10 degrees reduction in temperature you need 3% more fuel so cold weather isn't going to make much difference.

Summer temps are around 15-20 degrees, Current temp 0-5 degrees
there's 3% more fuel atleast there Wink

Drive it and enjoy it. If you want an economical car then you need to buy a) a diesel or b) a brand new Eco car.

If it has had a good service and tyre pressure are correct and your driving style is perfectly Eco then there is nothing else you can do.

Mattie- 5% more fuel used. At 27mpg = 1.35mpg less = 25.65mpg Wink

I drive a 138 and I get between 32 and 37 mpg.

I know a GTI isn't one of the most economical cars out there but 27 mpg still is very poor - if driven softly! So in my opinion there's either something wrong with the car or with the style of driving... Wink

You've a good point there... The actual cost is so high when you look at everything - depreciation, mot, service, tax, insurance etc etc the actual percentage of the full running costs for the difference between 30 and 40mpg will be fairly small.

In other words may as well enjoy your car to its potential!

Yup - I like driving, I wouldn't want to hate it and squeeze an extra 5-10 miles out of every 6 quid I put in the tank.

It's like people who have cars with things such as air con, heated seats etc then don't use it to save fuel, surely driving in comfort is worth saving a minimal amount on fuel.

Sorry, but this discussion is not really helping... I think he knows that there are a lot of cars out there that are much more 'eco' than a GTI.

But a softly driven typical GTI does nonetheless seem to have a much better mileage than what he's currently getting. So there must be something wrong with the car.

My typical commute is about 8 miles with a little bit of city traffic and now in the winter I still get way over 30 mpg.

Well put, thank you!

****UPDATE****

Well, i disconnected the battery and removed the MAP sensor and was very surprised to see it was exactly the same as that fitted to my old Laguna dci. Even more surprising was its condition. Absolutely caked in grime/dust. A couple of hours soak in some electrical contact cleaner, a scrub with a model paint brush and a wipe with a rolled up piece of kitchen roll revealed the amount of gunk that was in there, 99,000 miles worth. I suspect it has had an induction kit (a naff one at that!) and has sucked in a fair bit more than it should have.

Battery back on, and out for a spin. Felt different straight away. More responsive at the bottom of the rev range, not so much up top. Anyway, the commute back felt no different but the figures don't lie. Fuel light on > 20 litres (4.34 gallons) in > 160 miles exactly...fuel light on. That's 36.8mpg. Somewhat different to the 27mpg only a few weeks ago.

Now I have had the opportunity (over the xmas break rather than just commuting) I have been driving it hard on twisty back roads and it's a brilliant little car. Handling and feel are superb, engine is nice and lively and pulls hard especially out of low speed corners and over taking is a joy!

Regards,
Jim

It's at the front of the inlet manifold. Just one 8mm bolt IIRC. Do it when the engine is cool or you'll burn your hand on the rad. My advice would be: Disconnect the battery, undo the bolt and use the loom to assist the removal (gently!)

i have currently got 29.1 MPG out of my last half tank of fuel in my xsi Razz

knocking about can usually get around 34-36 MPG taking it steady

20 mile commute to work can easily get about 42 MPG without even trying to save fuel

i cant see the figures being massively different on the 2.0 gti
