You've a good point there... The actual cost is so high when you look at everything - depreciation, mot, service, tax, insurance etc etc the actual percentage of the full running costs for the difference between 30 and 40mpg will be fairly small.
In other words may as well enjoy your car to its potential!

Yup - I like driving, I wouldn't want to hate it and squeeze an extra 5-10 miles out of every 6 quid I put in the tank.
It's like people who have cars with things such as air con, heated seats etc then don't use it to save fuel, surely driving in comfort is worth saving a minimal amount on fuel.

my 2000 gti 138 averages around 30mpg, when it runs out i fill it up

But a softly driven typical GTI does nonetheless seem to have a much better mileage than what he's currently getting. So there must be something wrong with the car.
My typical commute is about 8 miles with a little bit of city traffic and now in the winter I still get way over 30 mpg.

****UPDATE****
Well, i disconnected the battery and removed the MAP sensor and was very surprised to see it was exactly the same as that fitted to my old Laguna dci. Even more surprising was its condition. Absolutely caked in grime/dust. A couple of hours soak in some electrical contact cleaner, a scrub with a model paint brush and a wipe with a rolled up piece of kitchen roll revealed the amount of gunk that was in there, 99,000 miles worth. I suspect it has had an induction kit (a naff one at that!) and has sucked in a fair bit more than it should have.
Battery back on, and out for a spin. Felt different straight away. More responsive at the bottom of the rev range, not so much up top. Anyway, the commute back felt no different but the figures don't lie. Fuel light on > 20 litres (4.34 gallons) in > 160 miles exactly...fuel light on. That's 36.8mpg. Somewhat different to the 27mpg only a few weeks ago.
Now I have had the opportunity (over the xmas break rather than just commuting) I have been driving it hard on twisty back roads and it's a brilliant little car. Handling and feel are superb, engine is nice and lively and pulls hard especially out of low speed corners and over taking is a joy!

Might try clean the MAP sensor on it see if it improves.

Do it when the engine is cool or you'll burn your hand on the rad. My advice would be: Disconnect the battery, undo the bolt and use the loom to assist the removal (gently!)

knocking about can usually get around 34-36 MPG taking it steady
20 mile commute to work can easily get about 42 MPG without even trying to save fuel
i cant see the figures being massively different on the 2.0 gti
