driving home from trafford centre last night me engine management light come on, this morning about to drive me car to uni reversing out the drive heard a clunk from the rear thought wtf was that drove round to the roundabout at the top of the road, my brakes pedal had to be pushed to the floor to and didnt work, so tried putting me handbrake on and it lifted vertical with little force, come home took take a look at me car and me left hand rear of the car was stuck like the handbrake was on when trying to reverse out the drive again, just took it too the garage scariest thing ever drving with no brakes anyone got any clues as what could be up with it?

help much appreciated

Brakes: could be you've lost the lining on the rear shoe if you have drum brakes. That would mean the shoe moves too far and the piston looses fluid. If the wheel is jammed on, that would be the loose lining jamming between the other shoe and the drum.

If both pedal and handbrake aren't right then it's something that shares both so won't be cables or fluid related. As mentioned above, more than likely something to do with the brake shoes at the rear.

Check the shoe hasnt snapped, happened to mine and the handbrake wouldnt work and the brake pedal went really really 'squishy' and would only brake when you floored the pedal

x2, sounds like the brake shoe lining has delaminated off the shoe, causing a massive play in the brakes which will affect both service brake and handbrake. In theory, you still have braking by pumping the pedal but obviously it needs sorting ASAP.

Do you do your own servicing and if so, do you check the brakes every 6 months or so? Or if its a garage, did they do it? Its definitely worth it, to keep an eye on things and clean them up every so often too.

Bit of a stupid thing to do & then admit on a public forum Rolling Eyes

If the brakes are not working then it should have been recovered to the garage on a recovery truck.

garage has got back to me now and the rear shoes have gone and they said a wheel bearing as well but ive had no problems with the wheel bearing so me dad reckons they broke it when getting to the rear shoes and my cat has just been replaced and they said i need a new one for the eml light but they just replaced it 3 weeks ago so dont have a clue what they are playing at

Would have been a cheap non genuine cat, what else do you expect as they sound like a load of back street bodgers Wink

Needs a proper exhaust emissions test so you can work out whats exactly wrong with it.

Its quite possible they broke the wheel bearing getting the drum apart. You'll still have to pay for it though, think of it as consequential damage to the original problem. Its not their fault you damaged the brakes, etc.

The cat - I think there's a reset which needs to be done on the ECU after a new one is fitted? Its possible the first garage who replaced the cat didn't do this, resulting in the second garage needlessly replacing it again. Can you go back to the 1st garage and confirm? If so, then the 1st replacement cat should get replaced (what, the 2nd garage have thrown it away now???) and you shouldn't be charged for this. Was the 1st one type-approved?

Any info on how often you had the brakes serviced?

its the same garage ive gone back too, they have given it a diagnostics check so will post fault codes later, how much is an exhaust emissions test?

quite normal to renew the rear wheel bear when you doing work on drum brake

It's common for the bearings to fall apart when you take them off. The inner race gets stuck to the stub axle and there is no way it will come off in one piece. So the garage end up with the out stuck in the drum, the inner stuck on the stub axle and a load of ball bearings all over the floor.
