#3: Re: handbrake gone, no brakes, eml Author: tomd0801754, Location: MoscowPosted: Wed Dec 14, 2011 5:43 am ---- Sounds like two seperate faults to me.
You haven't p*ssed anyone off recently have you?
#4: Re: handbrake gone, no brakes, eml Author: gazza82, Location: South BucksPosted: Wed Dec 14, 2011 6:12 am ---- Brakes: could be you've lost the lining on the rear shoe if you have drum brakes. That would mean the shoe moves too far and the piston looses fluid. If the wheel is jammed on, that would be the loose lining jamming between the other shoe and the drum.
#5: Re: handbrake gone, no brakes, eml Author: Edward, Location: In the garagePosted: Wed Dec 14, 2011 6:53 am ---- If both pedal and handbrake aren't right then it's something that shares both so won't be cables or fluid related. As mentioned above, more than likely something to do with the brake shoes at the rear.
#6: Re: handbrake gone, no brakes, eml Author: Antknee, Location: ManchesterPosted: Wed Dec 14, 2011 7:00 am ---- Check the shoe hasnt snapped, happened to mine and the handbrake wouldnt work and the brake pedal went really really 'squishy' and would only brake when you floored the pedal

x2, sounds like the brake shoe lining has delaminated off the shoe, causing a massive play in the brakes which will affect both service brake and handbrake. In theory, you still have braking by pumping the pedal but obviously it needs sorting ASAP.
Do you do your own servicing and if so, do you check the brakes every 6 months or so? Or if its a garage, did they do it? Its definitely worth it, to keep an eye on things and clean them up every so often too.

Bit of a stupid thing to do & then admit on a public forum
If the brakes are not working then it should have been recovered to the garage on a recovery truck.
#10: Re: handbrake gone, no brakes, eml Author: sc206, Location: WarringtonPosted: Wed Dec 14, 2011 9:19 am ---- garage has got back to me now and the rear shoes have gone and they said a wheel bearing as well but ive had no problems with the wheel bearing so me dad reckons they broke it when getting to the rear shoes and my cat has just been replaced and they said i need a new one for the eml light but they just replaced it 3 weeks ago so dont have a clue what they are playing at

Would have been a cheap non genuine cat, what else do you expect as they sound like a load of back street bodgers
Needs a proper exhaust emissions test so you can work out whats exactly wrong with it.
#12: Re: handbrake gone, no brakes, eml Author: paul_c, Location: UKPosted: Wed Dec 14, 2011 9:24 am ---- Its quite possible they broke the wheel bearing getting the drum apart. You'll still have to pay for it though, think of it as consequential damage to the original problem. Its not their fault you damaged the brakes, etc.
The cat - I think there's a reset which needs to be done on the ECU after a new one is fitted? Its possible the first garage who replaced the cat didn't do this, resulting in the second garage needlessly replacing it again. Can you go back to the 1st garage and confirm? If so, then the 1st replacement cat should get replaced (what, the 2nd garage have thrown it away now???) and you shouldn't be charged for this. Was the 1st one type-approved?
Any info on how often you had the brakes serviced?
#13: Re: handbrake gone, no brakes, eml Author: sc206, Location: WarringtonPosted: Wed Dec 14, 2011 9:29 am ---- its the same garage ive gone back too, they have given it a diagnostics check so will post fault codes later, how much is an exhaust emissions test?
#14: Re: handbrake gone, no brakes, eml Author: Seabook, Posted: Wed Dec 14, 2011 12:08 pm ---- quite normal to renew the rear wheel bear when you doing work on drum brake
#15: Re: handbrake gone, no brakes, eml Author: gazza82, Location: South BucksPosted: Wed Dec 14, 2011 2:28 pm ---- It's common for the bearings to fall apart when you take them off. The inner race gets stuck to the stub axle and there is no way it will come off in one piece. So the garage end up with the out stuck in the drum, the inner stuck on the stub axle and a load of ball bearings all over the floor.
#16: Re: handbrake gone, no brakes, eml Author: macca1411, Location: Westhoughton, LancashirePosted: Wed Dec 14, 2011 3:15 pm ---- The same garage fitted the cat 3 weeks ago and have said it's gone already? It should still be covered by manufacturer warranty, so you shouldn't be paying for that.
Hope they replaced the hub nuts when they did they sorted the brakes.

Total b******s, ive had my drums of 6 / 7 times over the years when doing the yearly brake clean / check & never once had the wheel bearing fall apart.
If things are looked after / serviced correctly you dont get a problem.
A lot of people the first time the drum gets removed is when something fails like the brake shoes
#18: Re: handbrake gone, no brakes, eml Author: paul_c, Location: UKPosted: Thu Dec 15, 2011 1:24 pm ---- You can normally remove drums without damaging bearings if they're in reasonable condition and nothing is seized. If the brake shoe delaminates, then often (a lot of) brute force is needed to remove the drum, since it all jams up inside.
#19: Re: handbrake gone, no brakes, eml Author: retta, Location: leedstown, cornwallPosted: Thu Dec 15, 2011 2:14 pm ---- i had to get my wheel bearings, shoes and drums replaced recently, think they said something with an adjustor not working properly and the shoes had made/forced grooves in the drums. also had some missing bolts here and there which was a worry...
i hope you get your problems sorted soon
