#1: why are 206 gti's so cheap? Author: m4tth3w, Location: sheffieldPosted: Wed Dec 14, 2011 4:15 pm ---- It seems you can buy one of these car's very cheap indeed, under a 900 quid on ebay.
Why is such a nice car with loads of toys so cheap?
Is it the recession?
#2: Re: why are 206 gti's so cheap? Author: luke030588, Location: peterboroughPosted: Wed Dec 14, 2011 4:34 pm ---- Petrol price, tax and insurance, people are watching what they spend their money on these days, also they are not the newest cars any more.
#3: Re: why are 206 gti's so cheap? Author: jayz206gti, Location: TamworthPosted: Wed Dec 14, 2011 4:35 pm ---- Because the early ones are over 12 years old now, add that to the fact they have a big engine it means people dont want the added fuel bill with current petrol prices. Its effected all hot hatches and performance vehicles. Its a buyers market at the moment not a sellers. Things are only worth what people are willing to pay.
#4: Re: why are 206 gti's so cheap? Author: Mrs_Howey, Location: WorthingPosted: Wed Dec 14, 2011 4:38 pm ---- Its because they are stupidly expensive to tax (like the equivalent of a Leon cupra or Audi S3 without the performance) and to insure group 17 for the 180 and 15 or something for the 138. Which is ridiculous really for the price of the car/ performance of the car.
My bf is getting an S3 next which is the same to tax and cheaper to insure than a 180!
Stupid!!
#5: Re: why are 206 gti's so cheap? Author: Rob2859, Location: HalifaxPosted: Wed Dec 14, 2011 4:40 pm ---- Same reason I don't have one; insurance. I could live with the petrol consumption.
#6: Re: why are 206 gti's so cheap? Author: ARRAN, Location: WiltshirePosted: Wed Dec 14, 2011 4:48 pm ---- For a young person; I'd guess insurance, I'm 18 and got quoted like, £5,500 haha. And for an older person, its probably more convenient to buy a smaller engined car which is more economical.

This. Its actually cheaper in terms of running costs than a 206 GTI!
No brainer.

#10: Re: why are 206 gti's so cheap? Author: Nic_206, Location: cleaning the carPosted: Wed Dec 14, 2011 5:24 pm ---- I was sorting quotes out for the 206 v6 and a astra turbo and the price of the pair of them combined came to the same total as a cupra r :S dont really understand that one as the cupra r was standard too :S
#11: Re: why are 206 gti's so cheap? Author: jayz206gti, Location: TamworthPosted: Wed Dec 14, 2011 5:38 pm ---- Only problem there Howey is an S3 isnt as cheap to buy at all
#12: Re: why are 206 gti's so cheap? Author: Howey, Location: Kings LynnPosted: Wed Dec 14, 2011 5:47 pm ---- 5K for a decent one. Im after first of the 225 with a BAM engine code. Forged internals with VVT
#13: Re: why are 206 gti's so cheap? Author: jayz206gti, Location: TamworthPosted: Wed Dec 14, 2011 5:52 pm ---- Thats alot more than the 1-2k for a gti though. Plus they are way more to maintain with servicing ect. Ive owned 3 imprezas and its the maintenance that hits you in the wallet.
#14: Re: why are 206 gti's so cheap? Author: pug206lx, Location: Taking a gearbox off somewherePosted: Wed Dec 14, 2011 7:49 pm ---- No one can afford to run them so there's no demand to boost the price - in fact its the same with most cars at the moment. Ive stopped trying now because i might be having change of plans but i spent 2 months trying to find tidy price for my Golf GTI with a private plate.
If you had little money would you pick a small modern car in a low tax bracket or a thirsty 2.0 petrol?
#15: Re: why are 206 gti's so cheap? Author: rick-gti, Location: welshpool, mid walesPosted: Thu Dec 15, 2011 2:14 am ---- i very nearly brought another 2000 gti 138 for £500. glad i didnt now as i probably wouldnt have made a profit on selling it on.
im planning on selling up after xmas and getting an accord type R as the insurance is not much different to my gti and tax is the same aswell. 138 bhp to 212 bhp and not much difference in insurance
all down to the amount of accidents and claims people make.
#16: Re: why are 206 gti's so cheap? Author: HDI90, Location: sunny stokePosted: Thu Dec 15, 2011 3:25 am ---- Ive owned both GTI and 180 and the insurence is only slighty more on the 180 but like others are saying who wants a car that will do a sub 25mpg?
A friend of mine has got a 2011 AUDI RS3 and that dont even cost a grand to insure so that must be the killer
maybe in a few years they might go up like the 205 GTI????
#17: Re: why are 206 gti's so cheap? Author: m4tth3w, Location: sheffieldPosted: Sat Dec 17, 2011 3:55 am ---- SO are we saying the 180 is better on fuel than standard gti? Or is it just that the 180s are a bit newer.

It might be a big cost once a year for servicing, but weigh that against the cost of repairs needed to keep a 12 yr old car on the road and they probably work out similar over the time you own the car.
#19: Re: why are 206 gti's so cheap? Author: jayz206gti, Location: TamworthPosted: Sat Dec 17, 2011 6:43 am ---- Your talking about two completely different calibre of cars macca, the S3 will cost more in every way. I wouldnt be driving my 180 now if it only cost slightly more for my impreza. I save around £150 a month with my 180.

If you think a 206 GTI is a nice car then you have pretty low standards.
Decent condition 206 GTI's are getting harder to find these days, most have now been ruined / written off by boy racers / chavs due to there cheap purchase price.
End of the day its a old French designed shopping hatch fitted with the engine that isnt that special anyway lifted out of the 406.
#21: Re: why are 206 gti's so cheap? Author: Edward, Location: In the garagePosted: Sat Dec 17, 2011 7:29 am ---- An immaculate, standard looking 206 GTi is a nice car. A cheap nice car. Quite desirable as a small hot hatch going back nearly 10 years. But anybody with some money these days looks at newer cars.
Age means they are cheap. Simple as that.
The market considers the 206 to be an old car, the 207 is even obsolete these days. They still have half decent equipment levels with all the safety kit but a car first launched 13 years ago isn't new anymore.
#22: Re: why are 206 gti's so cheap? Author: m4tth3w, Location: sheffieldPosted: Sat Dec 17, 2011 7:56 am ---- I think it's nice, everyone to their own.
Everything works and it's well equip'd with loads of toys and half leather.
Just because it's cheap doesn't mean it's not a nice car.
#23: Re: why are 206 gti's so cheap? Author: m4tth3w, Location: sheffieldPosted: Sat Dec 17, 2011 7:57 am ---- So is a 180 better on fuel than a 138?
#24: Re: why are 206 gti's so cheap? Author: Lee, Location: EnglandPosted: Sat Dec 17, 2011 7:58 am ---- Depends on how you drive.
#25: Re: why are 206 gti's so cheap? Author: Edward, Location: In the garagePosted: Sat Dec 17, 2011 8:07 am ---- No it's not, hence the higher CO2 output which is directly linked to fuel consumption.
#26: Re: why are 206 gti's so cheap? Author: Lee, Location: EnglandPosted: Sat Dec 17, 2011 8:09 am ---- It depends how you drive though. I can get a worse MPG out of a HDi than a GTi quite easily.
#27: Re: why are 206 gti's so cheap? Author: crocdino, Location: LeedsPosted: Mon Dec 19, 2011 1:40 pm ---- I really like the 206... It's not half as nice as my Saab but it's ok. It's a bit bloody noisy and quite uncomfortable! but i do like it for some reason. lol
My lasses is standard and completely un-messed with so am hoping when we flog it in 3 years (for a 197 Cup) someone will want it.
#28: Re: why are 206 gti's so cheap? Author: Necro, Location: BedfordshirePosted: Sat Dec 31, 2011 3:06 pm ---- I paid £950 for my 99 GTi 2 years ago. Was hoping to get around the same back next year when I sell up but they seem to be going for a fair bit less
