What connection is this? + Oil leak
-> 206 Problems

#1: What connection is this? + Oil leak Author: deanparkr, Location: United Kingdom PostPosted: Mon Dec 19, 2011 10:00 am

Whilst investigating under the bonnet to find an oil leak I have discovered this on the near side of the car (right as you look at it). Any ideas what this is and if I need to connect the two wires. Although it looks like they should go together they dont seem to be a perfect fit. Very mysterious!

Also I have identified a tiny oil leak on the front off-side of the engine (left looking into the bonnet). The oil leak is falling just by the side of the power steering pulley / belt (?). Currently its a very small leak and just wondered if it is common for 206's to get a leak in this place?

Garage are suggesting head gasket replacement but now that I have seen the leak I am not so sure!

those connections are for different lights. dont worry about them

head gaskets hardly ever leak oil externaly more likely internaly bu would smoke alot you would know about it, check your coolent and oil cap for caramel looking substance.

its more likley rocker cover leaking or the power steering.

The grey 3 pin connector is for the crystal H7 head lamp.

The grey 2 pin connector looks like the one for front fog lamps.

Ah I have neither of those so that makes sense Smile Thanks!

As far as I can see the leak is external and the oil is sitting on the metal bar just to the right of the power steering thingy. Have cleaned the oil away now to judge how much leaking is going on. I'll post another picture sometime.

Is the oil leak coming from around the silver rocker cover at the very top of the engine?

This isnt my car but shows I have highlighed the area where the oil was found:

Based on that I presume it is coming from the top cover and dropping down (maybe?)

look for the highest point you can see the oil and its probabbly comeing from that gasket on the rocker covery, they crack and leak, get a new one and go from there

Trick with the TU rocker cover gasket, make sure you use the correct torque on the rocker cover bolts.

Do them up to tight & the rocker cover will bend slightly like a banana which make the oil leak start again Wink

Interesting, I cant identify any oil at the silver cover.

Will check back in a few days and see precisely the leak is coming from. Probably should have looked harder the first time round!

Ok so I have had a closer look with the phone camera and have managed to find the source. Can certainly see a bit more with better lighting! Shocked The oil actually starts furter in from the left than originally thought and appears at the bottom of the engine. Cause for much concern?

Head gasket, TU lumps always seem to leak there, its a common problem,

Just keep an eye on it, if it gets worse / starts leaking oil in to the alternator then its time for a new head gasket.
