#1: Abarth Grey 205 GTI - Inside painted! Author: Lowercase, Location: East SussexPosted: Wed Dec 28, 2011 1:48 pm ---- Hi guys,
picked myself up a new project the other day. Miami Blue 205 GTI 1.6. manual windows, no power steering, no airbags, a light as hell.
On the whole it's in pretty good nick, just dirty. one scratch on the passenger door that will need some attention from chips away, and one 'air riffle hole near the rear passenger wheel, which i'll sort at work.
hardly any rust however and it goes like the clappers.
it has some jbl's in the front too, which is nice i guess.
pic from when i got it home.
and with my 206
started stripping out the interior for a damn good clean. 20 years of dirt, dust, cigarette ash and rubbish. being thorough, so air vents out, replacing the foam around them etc, sorting any small surface rust in the boot before re carpeting and putting the plastics back in.
the front seats are a bit knackered as usual in 205's
and i think my recaro's would look a bit out of place, so they will be sold to help fund the gti.
can anyone tell me if these half leather seats from the MG ZR will fit?
i know ill have to whip up some frames at work, and get creative with the rear bench (maybe switch the cover over) but the seat belt pretensioners could be a problem come M.O.T, could i take all that out and use the pug seat belts?
i think they'd look quite good in the gti, suit it quite well, and can get a set in top condition for under £100.
will keep updates coming C&C welcome as always Last edited by Lowercase on Sat Sep 29, 2012 11:55 am; edited 2 times in total

#3: Re: Miami Blue 205 GTI Author: Lowercase, Location: East SussexPosted: Wed Dec 28, 2011 2:41 pm ---- i dont know why we drive anything else! theyre brilliant, no air bags, no power steering, and the only crumple zone is my face, but other than that, brilliant!

#5: Re: Miami Blue 205 GTI Author: Lowercase, Location: East SussexPosted: Wed Dec 28, 2011 3:22 pm ---- its my cheap poke in the eye to the government. £200 cheaper to insure than my 206. and way faster.
got it for under £1000. but it needs a bit of work (as they all do). whether or not i go 100% original will depend on if i can get some front seats in good condition.
but basically i wanted something with a bit of character, that already has a few dings in the doors and stuff, so i can park it at tesco and not worry about some muppet opening his door into it etc. and just a bit of fun to work on and bomb around in, something cheap to put a smile on my face.
but i want to try and restore it with mostly just elbow grease. current schedule is:
- Strip interior plastics and carpets out - thorough wash and shampoo of everything.
- clean interior metals, and treat any small surface rust.
- rip out the stupid aftermarket immobiliser and alarm some muppet fitted.
- interior back in. smelling nice and new and looking good.
- sort out front seats with either o.e.m parts or, the above mg seats etc.
- full service:
oil filter, engine flush, oil change, sump plug washer, air filter, fuel filter, cam belt change. spark plugs, ht leads, upgrade gear linkages and bushes here and there
- clean up engine bay. - it has a new gear box so the sub frames caked in oil from the lazy mechanic.
- remove and shot blast any thing i can get off - and a coat of hammerite to tart them up a bit.
- underseal the undersides
- have scratch on the door fixed
- fix the gunshot hole.
- plasticare the arches and door trim - replace any missing clips.
- find a replacement wind deflector for the vacuum sunroof.
- refurbish the pepperpot wheels
im going to run the standard sunroof through the summer and see if it grows on me.
otherwise ill remove it, fill in the holes from the rails, and cut a piece of carbon fiber out to fill the gap for the sunroof. spray it miami blue, and fit it with hiden brackets and rubber seal that we use at work to fit after market windows to VW pannel vans.
it wont work, but it will look a lot neater than rivetting it on and looking like a dogs dinner. should just look like a standard sunroof on any other car that happens to be body coloured.
sounds a lot, but it's ongoing, id love to do the full strip and respray and make it 100% mint, but then it will be too precious and i wont want to use it.

yea, i'd like to keep the original seats if i can. the rear bench is great, just needs a good clean. the passenger seat fabric looks in good nick, no rips, just has a collapsed foam side on the side you get out..
the drivers seat has a rip and collapsed foam on the side you get out.
so i just need one seat in great condition. and i can use that for the drivers seat, and take the foam from the current seat to put in my passenger seat. so ill be watching ebay etc like a hawk.

hill billy target practice maybe.. ill have one of the pannel beaters at work take a loot at it, shouldnt be too much of a problem

all things i would have ripped out to be honest. i just want it basic. would like the 1.9 though lol but the extra 10bhp isnt worth the higher premium and tax imo.
maybe next time, i can see myself getting another one to totally overhall when this ones finished.
#16: Re: Miami Blue 205 GTI Author: MrBSI, Location: What's it to you? ? ?Posted: Thu Dec 29, 2011 11:08 am ---- 1.9 is a much nicer 205 GTI to drive
Plenty of lazy low down torque
#17: Re: Miami Blue 205 GTI Author: Lowercase, Location: East SussexPosted: Thu Dec 29, 2011 11:28 am ---- yea id definately like to try one, i can solemnly say my next one will be of the 1.9 breed.
#18: Re: Miami Blue 205 GTI Author: Lowercase, Location: East SussexPosted: Fri Dec 30, 2011 12:53 pm ---- a new leather gear surround came today to replace the tatty old one. real nice genuine cow hide for a reasonable £8, and its a really accurate replica so jobs a good'un! ill have to have a go at putting some leather on the gear knob now and refurbishing the gear grid on top to match
#19: Re: Miami Blue 205 GTI Author: Lowercase, Location: East SussexPosted: Sat Dec 31, 2011 12:38 pm ---- did the oil change today. what a mission.
this is what we found inside the engine oil cap
looks like some one had taken a dump in the engine. so we used some engine flush and cleaned up what we could and after an hours battle with a rusty sump plug we had this
still a little glob hanging on the side, so ill get something down there tomorow to get it out. and i may need to replace the fat tube on the oil filler cap as that was clogged with it too. not sure what its called?but i imagine a change of air filter would be next on the list as it was connected to all that jazz..
and then after another hours battle with a rusted on oil filter, i replaced it and put in 5 ltrs of mobil super semi synthetic oil and a new oil filler cap. seems much happier now. so a good days work.
#20: Re: Miami Blue 205 GTI Author: Lowercase, Location: East SussexPosted: Mon Jan 02, 2012 11:02 am ---- did a bit more stripping out of the interior today, seats out
carpet and sound deadening out
but while i was doing this i noticed a lot of mud from under the remaining arch pannel, so i got the pannel off (buggering most the clips as i went! oops) and found this..
looks like its had a big dent pulled out at some point in its life. at least the repair looks good from the out side, but i think there must be a small gap under all this mud, from the wheels coming into the car..
what it should look like.
so thats my next job this week, get all that mud out and see what im dealing with, hopefully i can do an easy and effective fix.

205 air con...pah! Not worth having...ABS on an old pug....meh! PAS is nice to have though but i'd imagine that when you get a 205 going it might make for a good driving experience.
You're fairly cracking on with this project mate
#22: Re: Miami Blue 205 GTI Author: Lowercase, Location: East SussexPosted: Wed Jan 04, 2012 2:07 am ---- yea, power steering might be nice in tesco car park, but ill see how i get on without it first.
trying to get all the things that will take a while done before i switch my insurance over etc. but im back to work now so i only get daylight hours on the weekends to work on it. i'd like to get the wheels off too at some point and get under the car and underseal it etc and tidy up all the rusty suspension bits, but, time and money.
so im hoping i can sort out a bit more of the interior shell this weekend. and get the carpet washed.
funds are holding me up a bit, so trying to crack on with the free and cheap jobs (interior and interior metals and servicing) .
#23: Re: Miami Blue 205 GTI Author: Lowercase, Location: East SussexPosted: Sat Jan 14, 2012 12:06 pm ---- well, i finally managed to clear the crap out of that muddy arch, and got them both ready to have the rust treated. the cause of the mud it seems it the rubber sock that covers the fuel filler pipe has come out of its place on top of the wheel arch. so i need to get it back in there, or give it a healthy covering of duct tape!
i also fitted my new leather gaitor to its trim piece so that's ready to go back now
and after some vanish carpet cleaner and a good weekend of scrubbing, i got the carpet clean! and i pushed the boat out with some £10 halfords car mats...
and i got the shell all rust treated, sealed the edges and wiped it ready for a dusting of paint tomorow.
more to come C&C welcome as always
#24: Re: Miami Blue 205 GTI Author: Lowercase, Location: East SussexPosted: Sun Jan 15, 2012 2:05 pm ---- today i got cracking on painting the interior metal. some pics of its progression:
and then some blue..
not my finest paint job, but sod it, its going under carpet anyway. speaking of.. clean carpet back in
and matts in
decided to put a few finishing touches to the center console too after seeing a chap on here do it.
next up.. seats
#25: Re: Miami Blue 205 GTI Author: Lowercase, Location: East SussexPosted: Wed Jan 18, 2012 2:58 pm ---- been a bit busy this week collecting some parts and salvaging a seat.
what im rolling on.. seat A
and seat B
so, goodish foam from seat A out and the split glued back together
then some thin gauze fabric glued over it to strengthen it.
while im at it, ill add some gauze to the other foam too.
then time to pull out the duff foam from seat B
and then get the newly repaired foam in
the finished article, ready for a damn good clean!
#26: Re: Miami Blue 205 GTI Author: Lowercase, Location: East SussexPosted: Wed Jan 18, 2012 2:59 pm ---- the seat frames were also broken and swiveling all over the place, so i got the MIG out and with some help from the chaps at work, got them propa again and started cleaning them up ready for a bit of paint!
also had some deliveries this week, some dark grey acoustic fabric for the boot walls.
and an aftermarket gear knob to use while i decide what to do about the old one. but for £12 delivered i dont think its too bad at all.

all on a strict budget of course. i dont think ive spent much more than £60 on the miami yet. other than a few more bits to service. and a new drivers seat to find, most of it is just getting my hands dirty.
hoping total spend on doing it up wont exceed £500
#33: Re: Miami Blue 205 GTI Author: Mike_XS, Location: SouthamptonPosted: Tue Jan 24, 2012 5:58 pm ---- Looks really good mate! Coming on really well!
#34: Re: Miami Blue 205 GTI Author: Lowercase, Location: East SussexPosted: Sat Jan 28, 2012 12:49 pm ---- well, the weeks been a bit of a duff one for the GTI.
i did manage to get the center console and things back into the car. new gaiter and gear knob. the carbon fiber on the gear stick isnt staying, its just a quick fix for now.
also put the repaired passenger seat in. and test fitted the recaro thats still in one piece to see what the size was like. thoughts?
and i carpeted the side walls of the boot today. so that's the good bit.
and now the bad..
the replacement wind deflector i got doesn't fit, namely because my sunroof is some weird dealer fitted one off aftermarket jobby and the chances of finding he bits i need are nill ... so that will be removed this week and then ill start making up a plate at work to fill it in. after that it will all be smoothed over.
this has also somewhat changed my plans for the car a bit too, as the list of bits to be painted now spans half the car, ive decided to have a chap at work respray the whole thing. made more sense this way, otherwise ill have several different shades of blue with various finishes at considerable expense. so the new paint job wont be showcar standard, but it will at least be all one shade and all the same finish. mates rates mixed with a sorta 'the paintjob will be as good as i want to pay for' deal.
with that in mind i may yet add my own flair to the interior a bit more in the form of black suede recaros. but we'll see. i best get saving.
#35: Re: Miami Blue 205 GTI Author: craigdmjv, Location: WiltshirePosted: Sun Jan 29, 2012 1:05 pm ---- just get ecosse to do it there offering a service to restore 205 gtis now www.ecosse-peugeot.co....shment.asp
#38: Re: Miami Blue 205 GTI Author: Lowercase, Location: East SussexPosted: Sun Jan 29, 2012 4:03 pm ---- i think you've somewhat missed the point in a project.
ecosse is also a 486 mile trip each way. balls to that, and they are majourly expensive. i could pay for a paint job with the cost it would take to get my car to them.
i do car restoration for a living though, so doing 80% of the work myself is the only way to make these kind of projects financially sensible.
i dont want it to be an immaculate paint job though, as i'll loose sleep over it being dinged or scratched. just want it blue and shiny. these cars are meant to be enjoyed.
i gave the car a really good soapy clean today so i could assess the paint work as it stands and its a bit of a mess when you look at it, faded dull worn laquer, little bobbles, some smooth paint, some orange peel. and even a ring mark on the bonnet where someones left their drink on it.
so yea, it deserves another blow over with the spray gun.
some modifications may slip through now aswell. for example, black suede headliner/parcel shelf. i want to re dye the carpet aswell so its proper RED again, not pink. otherwise ill track down a dark grey one in good condition. the seats could also be in for a change, as im tempted to use my recaro seats now, trimmed up to suit. i wasnt going to use them but even the seat i repaired feels a bit 'fragile' when you get in it and out of it.
#39: Re: Miami Blue 205 GTI Author: Lee, Location: EnglandPosted: Sun Jan 29, 2012 4:11 pm ----
Ecosse, anybody that's in the know avoids them like the plague
#41: Re: Miami Blue 205 GTI Author: Lowercase, Location: East SussexPosted: Sun Feb 12, 2012 8:48 am ---- paid a trip to the new forest while i was having a weekend in hampshire and met a guy called matt from the owners club and swaped him an interior for some tidy little recaro's.
foams all good, so after ive got busy on the machine and recovered them in some nice leather i have laying around, and found something nice for the centres, they'll look the part.
i also started to strip the car down with a mate ready for it's respray.
crappy dealer fitted sunroof is off, ready to be filled it and smoothed over.
tailgate off and started taking the lights out,
rear hatch to be striped and for the wiper arm and washer nipple to be smoothed over.
and glad i spend to long cleaning all this, because now its gotta come out again! but, the red carpets wont be going back in
ill take the tail gate into work this week and do the smoothing and get that rubbed back ready for paint, bit by bit...
#42: Re: Miami Blue 205 GTI Author: craigdmjv, Location: WiltshirePosted: Sun Feb 12, 2012 9:09 am ---- re you painting inside too and maybe under seal under the car before spraying and colour you going with this or keeping it original
#43: Re: Miami Blue 205 GTI Author: Lowercase, Location: East SussexPosted: Sun Feb 12, 2012 10:55 am ---- ive done the floor pan already, and the inside isnt really getting done, just the insides of the doors.
colour will stay miami blue, but ill make it a splash darker whilst still staying in the same paint code.
(the early ph.1 gti's wer' a lighter shade of blue than the ph.2 so ill go a step darker still.)
im just stripping the interior to make life easier for the painters. and i may blow over the interior with the paint gun at work before it goes to the body shop.
im not going to take the dash out though, just loosen it so i can mask it off properly. and ill waxoil the underside in the summer, will get it up on the ramp at work and do it.
carpets coming out as im gunna put the dark grey one in from a 205 rallye thats coming into my posession in the next week or so. i dont like the red ive decided, faded and pink and is a bit much on a blue car.
the rallye also has a mint origional gear knob and a few bits of mint plastic trim that will also go in the miami as some pillock drilled holes all over my interior for a rubbish alarm system.
#44: Re: Miami Blue 205 GTI Author: craigdmjv, Location: WiltshirePosted: Sun Feb 12, 2012 12:39 pm ---- aha i know the issue with aftermarket alarms as my sons cinq has one fitted and he has just disconnected it and now the hazards don't work,

#49: Re: Miami Blue 205 GTI Author: Lowercase, Location: East SussexPosted: Wed Mar 14, 2012 4:19 pm ---- been quite busy with this thing.
got the tail gate stripped down and glass out so i can smooth over the rear wiper arm and washer jet holes.
and bonnet stripped down. not too bad, one ding to fill and some surface rust on the underside to cure and its good to go
finally got a template made up to fill in the sunroof hole aswell now. so thats the next majour step. and getting the bumpers and arches off without fecking the clips. this weekend i hope.
#50: Re: Miami Blue 205 GTI Author: Lowercase, Location: East SussexPosted: Tue Sep 11, 2012 1:29 pm ---- long time coming this update. but i took the week off work to really get this car done.
so, my roof solution.
tidied it up after the picture but forgot to photo it.
finished welding on the tailgate and did the filler work ready for paint.
then i attacked the rust under the bonnet. now the boot and bonnet are ready for paint
then i got the body kit off at last
and attacked some more surface rust with a wire wheel and bilt hamber hydrate 80
and more rust when i got the rear bumper off! die rust!
then onto the filler on the shell, just a few small dings thankfully
and.. a real head ache.. i lost the keys with the alarm imobiliser thing on, so.. have to go through all this bodgey boy racer wiring now and remove the alarm!
and thats about it for today and yesterday, started getting some of the plastic sheet up ready to make the spray booth. will add the sides when im ready to paint.
keeping the new colour a secret for now

If you were going to do the colour change I honest would have looked at a Matt colour and combined it with the gloss on the plastics. Would have looked mean and subtle at the same time.
But I'm not a purist tbh, as I'm in the middle of rebuilding the Sorrento green with 309 underneaths a 206GTi engine on bike bodies and a set of 8jx16" dare dr-RS and silly lows lol

the plastics are getting a refurb with some plasticare so should be nice and black again. red stripes staying. 1.9 wheels and bonnet are going black and the body... well its a colour off the megane r26r. is as much as ill say for now.
should look very mean but still subtle.
#55: Re: Miami Blue 205 GTI Author: Lowercase, Location: East SussexPosted: Wed Sep 12, 2012 2:09 am ---- Uz how much of the engine swap have you done so far? thinking of putting a new lump in my 205 rallye. its just unusable everyday at the moment so im going to have to sell it unless i can think of something to make it more practical.
manual choke and cold starts and it going lumpy and overheating in traffic, its a bloody nightmare.
the 206 gti lump will be a right bell end to do because of the wiring? the 306 engine is a much easier swap, given how many off the shelf parts there are to aid the swap. more power too, though granted a bit heavyer.

Uz how much of the engine swap have you done so far? thinking of putting a new lump in my 205 rallye. its just unusable everyday at the moment so im going to have to sell it unless i can think of something to make it more practical.

I've not done much of the swap yet...working on rebuilding the entire interior loom from scratch due to majority of it being corroded. So just reworking that so its the bare essentials. No audio etc as I'll be running amps and rcas etc. But from what I've heard it's pretty much the same as the 306 engine in the way of slotting in just need shorter driveshafts and the exhaust manifold will need to be reworked. Will look into that once I've got the engine bay sprayed up etc.

rust at the back sorted:
remember the bullet whole from some git shooting the car? gone!
mmore filler work..
removing stuff in the engine bay, more rust!
and because i was bored. put my speedlines on the rallye
#58: Re: Miami Blue 205 GTI Author: Lowercase, Location: East SussexPosted: Sun Sep 23, 2012 2:09 pm ---- this weekend saw the first bit of spraying done. the inside is now fully primed! im going to leave it for a few days to harden, then flat it lightly and then on with the 2k colour.
this way i can get the inside done and mask it off and forget about it for now as its a git of a job spraying the inside of a car.
so, pics:

Got to respect people doing whole shell spray jobs, just something I could never be bothered with
#60: Re: Miami Blue 205 GTI Author: Lowercase, Location: East SussexPosted: Sun Sep 23, 2012 2:24 pm ---- i wouldnt do it again. its a LOT of work and swearing. and your mrs hates you etc lol
i enjoy it at times when things are goin gright, and i like painting as i seem to be quite a natural at it.
but yea, its a lot of stress. i want my 205 rallye resprayed at some point, but i dont think ill be doing it myself. would rather pay some one i think. i could handle doing the inside again myself, as my dash is almost fully out anyway so its not too much of a ffaff, just getting glass out etc. but there's less fixings in that so we'll see. must get this one finished now.
the colour i bought is propper lush also, so i cant wait to get that on it
#61: Re: Miami Blue 205 GTI Author: Harry, Location: StaffordPosted: Mon Sep 24, 2012 11:53 am ---- Things not going right is something you have to deal with when working on peugeots
Just try and keep it mint after, hate scratching new paint jobs
#62: Re: Miami Blue 205 GTI Author: Lowercase, Location: East SussexPosted: Mon Sep 24, 2012 11:57 am ---- another reason to paint it yourself. if you scratch it, can just repaint if yourself.
#63: Re: Miami Blue 205 GTI Author: Harry, Location: StaffordPosted: Fri Sep 28, 2012 7:08 pm ---- If you enjoy it, something I would hate to have to do more than once
#64: Re: Miami Blue 205 GTI Author: Lowercase, Location: East SussexPosted: Sat Sep 29, 2012 11:51 am ---- well, todays update might just justify an edit of the threads title! the inside has been painted!
For those with poor screen resolution, the colour i went for is Fiat Abarth Campovolo Grey! (was going to do it Lunar grey from the megane r26r but pearlescent is a pig to spray)
so, pics ! cant wait till tomorow to peel off the plastic and tape!
comments welcome
