a new leather gear surround came today to replace the tatty old one. real nice genuine cow hide for a reasonable £8, and its a really accurate replica so jobs a good'un! ill have to have a go at putting some leather on the gear knob now and refurbishing the gear grid on top to match

did the oil change today. what a mission.

this is what we found inside the engine oil cap

looks like some one had taken a dump in the engine. so we used some engine flush and cleaned up what we could and after an hours battle with a rusty sump plug we had this

still a little glob hanging on the side, so ill get something down there tomorow to get it out. and i may need to replace the fat tube on the oil filler cap as that was clogged with it too. not sure what its called?but i imagine a change of air filter would be next on the list as it was connected to all that jazz..

and then after another hours battle with a rusted on oil filter, i replaced it and put in 5 ltrs of mobil super semi synthetic oil and a new oil filler cap. seems much happier now. so a good days work.

did a bit more stripping out of the interior today, seats out

carpet and sound deadening out

but while i was doing this i noticed a lot of mud from under the remaining arch pannel, so i got the pannel off (buggering most the clips as i went! oops) and found this..

looks like its had a big dent pulled out at some point in its life. at least the repair looks good from the out side, but i think there must be a small gap under all this mud, from the wheels coming into the car..

what it should look like.

so thats my next job this week, get all that mud out and see what im dealing with, hopefully i can do an easy and effective fix.

Shame it's not a 1.9 GTI with aircon, pas & ABS.

205 air con...pah! Not worth having...ABS on an old pug....meh! PAS is nice to have though but i'd imagine that when you get a 205 going it might make for a good driving experience.

You're fairly cracking on with this project mate Smile

yea, power steering might be nice in tesco car park, but ill see how i get on without it first.

trying to get all the things that will take a while done before i switch my insurance over etc. but im back to work now so i only get daylight hours on the weekends to work on it. i'd like to get the wheels off too at some point and get under the car and underseal it etc and tidy up all the rusty suspension bits, but, time and money.

so im hoping i can sort out a bit more of the interior shell this weekend. and get the carpet washed.

funds are holding me up a bit, so trying to crack on with the free and cheap jobs (interior and interior metals and servicing) .

well, i finally managed to clear the crap out of that muddy arch, and got them both ready to have the rust treated. the cause of the mud it seems it the rubber sock that covers the fuel filler pipe has come out of its place on top of the wheel arch. so i need to get it back in there, or give it a healthy covering of duct tape!

i also fitted my new leather gaitor to its trim piece so that's ready to go back now

and after some vanish carpet cleaner and a good weekend of scrubbing, i got the carpet clean! and i pushed the boat out with some £10 halfords car mats...

and i got the shell all rust treated, sealed the edges and wiped it ready for a dusting of paint tomorow.

more to come C&C welcome as always Smile

and then some blue..

not my finest paint job, but sod it, its going under carpet anyway. speaking of.. clean carpet back in

and matts in

decided to put a few finishing touches to the center console too after seeing a chap on here do it.

next up.. seats

been a bit busy this week collecting some parts and salvaging a seat.

what im rolling on.. seat A

and seat B

so, goodish foam from seat A out and the split glued back together

then some thin gauze fabric glued over it to strengthen it.

while im at it, ill add some gauze to the other foam too.

then time to pull out the duff foam from seat B

and then get the newly repaired foam in Very Happy

the finished article, ready for a damn good clean!

the seat frames were also broken and swiveling all over the place, so i got the MIG out and with some help from the chaps at work, got them propa again and started cleaning them up ready for a bit of paint!

also had some deliveries this week, some dark grey acoustic fabric for the boot walls.

and an aftermarket gear knob to use while i decide what to do about the old one. but for £12 delivered i dont think its too bad at all.
