#1: Tracking... Or worse? Please help Author: JordGJ, Location: Leeds / West MidlandsPosted: Fri Dec 30, 2011 3:48 pm ---- Right i have a handling problem that i've ignored for a while but after driving up the M1 tonight in the rain realised its actually quite dangerous and needs sorting, I THINK the tracking needs doing because it's been a long time since it was last done and a few suspension bits have been replaced since...
Here are my symptoms:
...car pulls to the right A LOT if I don't hold the wheel
...i have to hold the wheel about 1/8th of a turn to the left to drive in a straight line (probably because its constantly trying to pull right, sometimes i have to steer slightly left to take a gradual right turn haha)
...the steering feels very light and sort of, weak for the first quarter turn either way
as i say i think its tracking which i'll get done anyway but can anyone think of anything else it could be?
cheers, J

#3: Re: Tracking... Or worse? Please help Author: ramigojag, Location: worcestershirePosted: Fri Dec 30, 2011 3:57 pm ---- Have you got any irregular tyre wear?
Do the tyres squeal easily in the dry
#4: Re: Tracking... Or worse? Please help Author: macca1411, Location: Westhoughton, LancashirePosted: Fri Dec 30, 2011 4:01 pm ---- Easiest and cheapest thing to check is the tyre pressures. After that swap the front for the rear tyres so that they have equal tread wear and get it tracked. If you try and track it with the tyres as they are now, when you get new tyres on it will start pulling again.

not sure will have to have a look at the treads
and yes! very easily, but I assumed its because they are s*** tyres on steelies
and yeah pressures we're checked recently and are all the same
#6: Re: Tracking... Or worse? Please help Author: Addaz, Location: SuffolkPosted: Fri Dec 30, 2011 4:45 pm ---- Just get the tracking checked as lowering will throw it out
Check the bottom arm bushes NOT ball joint for wear too (as they split apart easy)
#7: Re: Tracking... Or worse? Please help Author: M60SHW, Location: CarlislePosted: Fri Dec 30, 2011 5:19 pm ---- you may have trouble:
1, finding someone to do it
2, tracking it correctly with the changes that have been made

I couldn't believe how much mine was out when I lowered it. It was perfect before and the laser was not even on the scale it was almost off the ramp. It was only a 35mm drop too.

Changing wheels can knock it out too. I changed from 15" Siroccos to 17" Vortex and the tracking was miles out!

#11: Re: Tracking... Or worse? Please help Author: Mike_XS, Location: SouthamptonPosted: Sat Dec 31, 2011 4:15 am ---- When I lowered mine it was 8degrees out on the tracking. After it had been done it was like driving a new car!
#12: Re: Tracking... Or worse? Please help Author: gixxerkev, Location: wiltshirePosted: Sat Dec 31, 2011 6:19 am ---- Afraid to say this but thats what happens when you F**k about with suspension and wheels, its all a matter of geometry.
#13: Re: Tracking... Or worse? Please help Author: Seabook, Posted: Sat Dec 31, 2011 6:30 am ---- that's the problem of macpherson suspension single wishbone system
#14: Re: Tracking... Or worse? Please help Author: tailhappy, Location: barnstaplePosted: Sat Dec 31, 2011 7:42 am ---- basically you take a deep breath and man the f*** up my favorite phrase ... (if in doubt, flat out) that will see you through anything i promise
#15: Re: Tracking... Or worse? Please help Author: Abzynthe, Posted: Sat Dec 31, 2011 7:49 am ---- It wont hurt to get the tracking checked at least Im not sure if its every branch, but Kingsway tyres near me check the tracking for free and only charge you if it needs doing. Although when I went and got mine done, they did ask if it was lowered or not.
#16: Re: Tracking... Or worse? Please help Author: LeeMaddern, Location: ScunthorpePosted: Sat Dec 31, 2011 7:54 am ---- I had the same problem, got 4 new tyres and it tracked up the same day, tracking was good.
But now at speeds the car shakes, wheels were correctly balances to 0
And at enthuseaatic speeds it gets worse ?
Sorry for hi-jacking but its sort if related
#17: Re: Tracking... Or worse? Please help Author: Addaz, Location: SuffolkPosted: Sat Dec 31, 2011 9:10 am ---- I love it when companies ask if its lowered or not nowadays
I just use the tracking gauges at work, as no one else can accomodate for 'lowered' cars
Does make me laugh when they feel that 30mm is too low, they should really see mine and jords
#18: Re: Tracking... Or worse? Please help Author: JordGJ, Location: Leeds / West MidlandsPosted: Sat Dec 31, 2011 1:47 pm ---- finding somewhere to do it isn't a problem I always use the same garage I know the lads there they don't b***h and whine because it's lowered they just drive it onto a couple of blocks on the ramp and it's all fine... will get tracking done Monday and hopefully that'll fix it!
