You can pick up some decent 206's for peanuts lately so id just keep looking on gumtree, pistonhead, autotrader, ebay and I'm sure there will be a car with your name on it.
I'd suggest a 180 but that all depends on your insurance, you can get a 180 for around your price range maybe a little higher, Its alot of car for the price IMO.

Though how long are you wanting to stay with a 206? Could always get a cheap 206 runaround for <800 that would do the job if you want to save money to upgrade soon (for this price they may not be top notch condition mind!).

Better mpg yes, but not more fun than a 180.
