DW8 diesel engine swop, no go!

Hi folks, I have a problem which perhaps you can help me with, its quite technical so inexperienced owners it ends here! I had a cambelt failure which took out the camshaft, 1998 DW8 engine (1868cc diesel), the injection pump with this failed engine is a Lucas DWLP11 pump, with manual advance. The replacement engine which comes from an O1 model, runs fine on its original later electronic pump (ECU controlled advance/retard), both pumps look identical except for the advance differences, the ali frame is the same, sprocket/timing holes etc are in the same position, yet the manual pump, although it will squirt nicely (have had one of the injectors out) with appropriate timed bursts whilst the engine is cranking, its a no go, although I refitted the original electronic pump just to prove to myself everthing was A1 with the engine (it was)I cannot use this pump as the vehicle has no ECU/BSI and although tickover is fine, I suspect that running with this pump without advance timing will be a problem Embarassed . Tried another DWLP11 pump with exactly the same result, non start, not even a hint. Its possible to alter the timing by a few degrees either way on the sprocket, have tried a few positions away from the timing position, with the same result. What is going on here? two failed mechanical pumps exhibiting the same problem seems to be too unlikely, engine block is the same, mounting holes for the pump is the same, its not a fuel delivery problem, just seems to be a timing issue, any ideas most welcome! regards, Sam

Isnt the stop solenoid on the dw8 pumps act as a immoblizer??? i know it is on the old 306 i had

if it is i had to cut open the side of the pump and put a feed to the stop solenoid to open it up to let the fuel in

i may be wrong but is sounds like it

here is where its located

Not a fuel delivery problem, coded stop solenoid is working as fuel is being delivered to the injectors, nice spray pattern from the injector.

Just out of curiosity, looks like a DWLP11 pump on a DW8 1868 engine, non turbo? any chance of having a clearer photo of the pipework, just had a thought, it the sequence is wrong i.e. different depending upon what pump, then it would never start, its easily checked, unfortunately from the angle of the camera, three of the pipes are obscured! Thanks for taking the time to reply, regards, Sam

Thanks folks, in conjunction with the photograph kindly supplied by a member, it turns out that the pipework is specific to the pump and is not interchangeable, DWLP11 pipework will not run a DWLP12 pump and vice versa. Thanks for taking the time to apply yourselves to my problem. Sam
