I've got a long trip tomorrow to Aberystwyth from Birmingham and a little concerned.
Basically when turning right I'm getting a ticking noise from the drivers side front wheel, I've applied full lock and done a visual inspection on the outer CV and cant see any issues.

Unless its leaked all its grease out, then it will cease in no time. Not to worry OP though, as you would see the efffects of a split CV. Just check trye pressures, nuts etc, and take it easy on speed!

Is it something I could do myself with the right tools or shall I garage it?

the intermediate bearing can be tricky getting it out of the mount at the back of the engine.
i unfastened the mount from its four bolts pulled in towards me on the shaft ,unfastened the two small
bolts which hold the bearing in and tapped it off,yours might come straight out ,pull it and see first.
after you have unfastened the two retaining bolts.
Dont forget to catch your oil when the driveshaft comes out.
