#1: Power Steering fluid - did I buy the wrong stuff? Author: PoppyChild, Location: LancsPosted: Mon Feb 06, 2012 4:26 am ---- Morning all.
I need to top up my power steering fluid as it's been leaking, I've picked up some wynns stop leak to see if that works first and I thought I got the right PS fluid but now I'm not so sure as it's a different colour to what's in the reservoir. The stuff in the car already is an amber colour and the stuff I've just picked up is red also it's auto transmission fluid (wouldn't be going to waste if it's wrong since I drive an auto), the bottle says - ATF DexronII automatic transmission fluid - is this wrong? if by some small miracle I've picked up the right stuff can I mix it with what's already in the car?
Car is 206 LX auto 1.4 if this helps any

wrong.
206 use ATF for PS pump.
but you better get the leak fix or your alternator will be dead soon

Author: gixxerkev, Location: wiltshirePosted: Mon Feb 06, 2012 7:07 am ---- Oh right sorry I didnt realise, I work on aircraft for a living and they have seperate oil for different things eg engine oil and hydraulic systems. Easy mistake to make.
Yeah fix the leak !!!

Is it best to top up when engine's cooled down?

The handbook that came with the car confuses me more than google when it comes to the fluids chart
It's getting looked at in the morning now
#9: Re: Power Steering fluid - did I buy the wrong stuff? Author: Seabook, Posted: Mon Feb 06, 2012 12:09 pm ---- only engine oil was on the chart.

No idea tbh, just found it through process of elimination of which fluid I had on my hand and knowing it's coming from underneath since the top is tight & dry. Been told £130 for the part (used)
Is that 'good' or bad leaking there? (I say 'good' since leaking isn't exactly what you need is it!)
As an aside is it worth buying the haynes manual just for ref and to aid in not getting ripped off for being clueless?

The reason I ask where the leak is because many times the power-steering pressure sensor will knacker
and it is simple enough to replace it and cure the leak.
However if it's the pump or hoses it's more involved and expensive. In any case as said above, fix the leak.
