#1: [solved] Starting problem with a difference Author: Locky, Location: Newcastle / Plymouth PostPosted: Sat Feb 11, 2012 4:32 am

Hi guys, ive had a search around and cant quite find the symptoms im having so thought I best post and see if anyone can help me out.

Multiplexed 2.0HDI, Im only driving my car at weekends now, last week when it started after a bit of reluctance, I put that down to the cold.

Today, I primed it 3 times, then tried to start. Did about 4 attempts turn over then it started to slow down so I stopped and tried again.
The sound of the pump prime was very lazy, and this time 'passenger airbag disabled' lit up, the car made a 'bong' sound (not the normal beep) and the windscreen wipers started to do a a very lazy sweep. (no i hadnt hit the stalk!)

Tested battery, its fluctuating around 12V so from what I understand, that should be sufficient. At this point im now worried this lack of starting has now fudged my BSI or something.

I do the BSI soft reboot, when I turn on the ignition the priming sounds normal again so I have hope, but trying to turn over the engine again sounds really sluggish and just results in a 'bong' sound and the wipers trying to sweep.

Any ideas on my next steps? Starter motor springs to mind of course, but would these be normal side effects? Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks.

I thought it was 12v at rest and 14v running?

I'm happy to be wrong if it just a case of a new battery.

12.4/12.6 is what you needed ideally.

Q) Is my battery flat?
A) Take it for a test 9/10 car garages or automotive shops will test them for free. If you have a multimeter you can check it yourself.
Battery voltage, approx power
Voltage ............Approximate charge
12.65 V ............100%
12.45 V............ 75%
12.24 V ............50%
12.06 V ............25%
11.89 V............ 0%

My battery was causing all symptoms you described above until I bought a boshe S4 battery all faults (air bag/wipers/bong) gone. The old battery did well for 5 years

Yeah I've just gone and taken another reading and it is a solid 11.95 so that's pretty dead then.

And I'm really relieved to hear the symptoms are inkeeping with a flat battery.

Yeah I was already thinking S4. You know what I got a feeling my current Varta is as old as the car.

When you remove your old battery make sure you follow the correct battery disconnection procedure Smile

Yeah I know about that. Switch everything off, remove key, window down, close door, wait 3 minutes, jump to the left, step to the right, put your hands on your hips....
