That shield is more to protect it from impact so as long as you don't hit anything solid you'll be ok.

think of it as a weight reduction kit its just a heat shield and the can is up out of the way from speed bumps and thing so don't worry about it getting ripped off, but some people remove all of the cat to get more power depending on were the lambda sensor is just don't leave the cat at the garage they can be scraped at a good price (note removing cats is now an mot fail)

Mine was spot welded on. Left it off for months and so far there's been no problems.
