Petrol in the oil

Car: 1.1L LX 206 Petrol 52 plate. Done ~74k miles

Hi

I was checking my oil today and noticed that there is petrol in with the oil. I'll get the oil changed ASAP but before I take it in to be looked at I wondered if anyone had any ideas of what might be the cause? I realise it could be the piston rings but wondered if anything else could be the problem?

By the way, any one know a decent garage in the Middlesbrough area? We've not long moved here and have yet to need anything done.

How do you know it is petrol?

This could be the case. IS there mayo on the oil cap?

At least you didn't put brake fluid in the oil. Someone did that and is subsequently selling their car on ebay for spares or repairs Laughing

i think you are right tom it will probably be Head gasket!

i have heard of petrol finding its way into the sump if you only ever do lots of short journeys

Are you seeing any signs of oil burning? Blue smoke from the exhaust? Dis-coloured spark plugs?Excessive oil usage?

Have you smelt the oil on the dipstick or even checked to see if it thinner than normal. You can usually tell by rubbing a bit between your finger and thumb.

Check your coolant level in the expansion bottle. Check to see if it low or contaminated with oil.

Could also be the valve stem seals.

A TU1 lump should last a lot longer then 74k miles unless its been really abused or neglected.

fuel dilution in engine oil is very common, all depends on how much % are you talking about.

The causes of fuel dilution can be the result of many things:

• Leaking injectors
• Excessive idle time
• Incomplete combustion
• Cool engine operating conditions
• Frequent short trip driving
• Performance chips/engine modifications
• Restricted air filter/bad air to fuel ratio
• Worn piston rings/excessive blow-by
• Incorrect choke settings
• Towing/lugging engine
• Fuel pump/over fueling
• Seals and gaskets
• Improper injector timing

This isnt neccessarily bad for your engine just as long as you change it now youve noticed it.I used to work with brand new vehicles and very often we had to change the oil before the customers got the vehicles because the oil would be very much thinned with petrol,now wether this was a factory preference or because they had to be ran a lot on very short journeys usualy on full clutch im not sure, but the engines were never damaged at all just filled with normal oil before delivery to the customers and the jobs a goodun.

This happens commonly, just most people dont notice it

The reason for it is short journeys in a nut shell, as the vehicle is on choke it lobs more fuel down the combustion chamber which in this case is washing away the oil (very bad) and leaking past the three rings to make its way to the sump or main oil gallery.

Ideally, just stop using the higher rev range when its cold and yeh hope for the best
