#1: Oil change/level Author: andyleep, Location: GloucestershirePosted: Mon May 14, 2012 1:48 pm ---- I have just done the first oil and filter change on my 180. I put just over 4.5 litres in and thought I'd check the level - the dash has six squares which means it is full! I thought they were supposed to hold 5.5?! The dipstick is showing that the level is above the maximum mark (but I have a feeling that it could be the wrong one). Opinions?
#2: Re: Oil change/level Author: Timon2210, Location: PalestinePosted: Mon May 14, 2012 1:52 pm ---- always depend on the dipstick to check the level of oil, because the digital one can not accurate sometimes, does it blink with the (Max) on the right,or not?
#3: Re: Oil change/level Author: andyleep, Location: GloucestershirePosted: Mon May 14, 2012 1:57 pm ---- No, it doesn't flash. Just have the six squares up for 10 seconds, with the min and max illuminated. So that would say to me it is at the maximum level, but not too high
#4: Re: Oil change/level Author: Timon2210, Location: PalestinePosted: Mon May 14, 2012 2:02 pm ---- The dipstick is showing that the level is above the maximum mark, right?
how much above the level, alot just few mm?
#5: Re: Oil change/level Author: andyleep, Location: GloucestershirePosted: Mon May 14, 2012 2:09 pm ---- I'd say over 10mm! But surely it cant be over the max level when I only put 4.5 litres in?!
#6: Re: Oil change/level Author: tomd0801754, Location: MoscowPosted: Mon May 14, 2012 2:18 pm ---- Don't use the digital one, use dipstick.
Is the car level?
#7: Re: Oil change/level Author: SinfulDesignCom, Location: Ashford, KentPosted: Mon May 14, 2012 2:20 pm ---- You should only have 4.5 litres in there... Any more and it will swell and blow out the gaskets. The dipstick is the best indication obviously but wait until the oil has settled in the sump before reading - it will take time to settle after you have just put the oil in or gone for a drive...
#8: Re: Oil change/level Author: andyleep, Location: GloucestershirePosted: Mon May 14, 2012 2:20 pm ---- Yep! What does a gti 180 dipstick look like?
Bit o' metal with a yellow ring thingy on t'other end
#10: Re: Oil change/level Author: andyleep, Location: GloucestershirePosted: Mon May 14, 2012 2:26 pm ---- Mine is a green end (not a ring type).........
#11: Re: Oil change/level Author: tomd0801754, Location: MoscowPosted: Mon May 14, 2012 2:29 pm ---- A dipstick is a dipstick... If you don't know what it looks like or where it is on your car. Don't try a DIY oil change, or even better, don't own a car.
It is a possible question on the drivibg test nowadays. Simple basic knowledge.
#12: Re: Oil change/level Author: andyleep, Location: GloucestershirePosted: Mon May 14, 2012 2:34 pm ---- I know what a dipstick is. I also know that different engines have different dipsticks so "a dipstick is a dipstick" (as you put it) is not correct. I'm just trying to establish if I have the correct one for a EW10J4S engine as, if it isn't, the reading is likely to be false

#14: Re: Oil change/level Author: broadblaster, Location: south coastPosted: Mon May 14, 2012 2:43 pm ---- According to the owner’s manual the regular 2.0L engine found in the GTi and the CC requires 4.25 litres of oil when changing the oil and filter, and the GTi180 requires 5.3 litres of oil for the same task. The manual is also quite strict on the use of 5W40 synthetic oil only for the GTi180
#15: Re: Oil change/level Author: SinfulDesignCom, Location: Ashford, KentPosted: Mon May 14, 2012 2:43 pm ---- Think you will find Peugeot part numbers will be different so little point speaking to dealer, so...

I stand corrected on the level - thank you, but use of 5w40 is a judgement call. Bear in mind that as engines build up the miles, the tollerance of the components will decrease meaning that thinner oil will get through piston ring gaps etc easier - meaning oil burning and eventual glazing... then new liners time!
I would say 10w40 for engines that have covered 50k+. But this is only my opinion - at the end of the day an oil change every 4-6k miles whatever the grade (within reason) will keep an engine in good nick..
#17: Re: Oil change/level Author: broadblaster, Location: south coastPosted: Mon May 14, 2012 2:51 pm ---- tbh i tend to use a 10w-40w myself

Thanks, I used 5W40 but not 5.3 litres! lol. Will check in the morning when it has all settled
#19: Re: Oil change/level Author: SinfulDesignCom, Location: Ashford, KentPosted: Mon May 14, 2012 3:03 pm ---- Please report back so we have an answered thread.
I wouldn't worry too much dude. You will soon know if you are burning oil! Just keep an eye on the level every coupla weeks... assuming you have the right dipstick.. LMAO
#20: Re: Oil change/level Author: andyleep, Location: GloucestershirePosted: Tue May 15, 2012 12:12 pm ---- I had the wrong dipstick - got a GTI 180 one today and its a fair bit shorter! The level now reads about half way on the dipstick - and for the amount of oil I put in yesterday, that would be about right I like getting these little imperfections sorted. But, as suggested, the electronic one must be faulty/inaccurate. Thanks for your time guys
#21: Re: Oil change/level Author: broadblaster, Location: south coastPosted: Tue May 15, 2012 12:17 pm ---- no probs fella glad you got it sorted out.
#22: Re: Oil change/level Author: SinfulDesignCom, Location: Ashford, KentPosted: Tue May 15, 2012 1:21 pm ---- thanks for reporting back. Just a heads up - the oil level sensor for the 180 is a few bucks shy of 50 squid. Buy a non genuine at your risk...
#23: Re: Oil change/level Author: andyleep, Location: GloucestershirePosted: Thu May 17, 2012 1:09 pm ---- Another oil issue I am concerned about.......
I'm guessing the oil light should come on when you turn the ignition on, then go out again (as the battery, airbag, esp lights etc do). Mine doesn't come on at all
#24: Re: Oil change/level Author: SinfulDesignCom, Location: Ashford, KentPosted: Thu May 17, 2012 2:22 pm ---- Check the bulb in the instrument cluster. If there was an electric fault it would normal come on and stay on.
If the bulb works its time to check your sensors.

All 206's Don't have a light for oil when you turn the ignition on as the battery and airbag,..etc.
It only goes on if there is something wrong with the oil in your engine, such as a bad and clogged filter,no oil,and such things related to oil.it will go on with the stop flashing and a beep
