Cambelt change?

#1: Cambelt change? Author: wordsmythles, Location: Cirencester PostPosted: Fri May 18, 2012 4:29 am

Hi all - I'm new to the site.

I have just bought a 2001 GTI - mainly as it has only 30,000 miles on the clock. I took it in to be serviced and the garage inform me that the cambelt 'may' need changing. Apparently it's 80,000 miles or 10 years and I have no service history to let me know if it has been done. And he quoted me over £500! I know nothing about mechanics but isn't there a way to tell if it has been done - and is it really necessary on a car with such low mileage?

Cheers!

Get it done ASAP!

£500 is excessive though.

If there's no history then chances are you wont be able to find out when it was last done. I would get it changed just for peace of mind. Its a bit of a tight job but easy enough to do.

EDIT: £500 is alot for a cambelt change, does that include the belt, water pump and tensioner?

As it is 2001 I am assuming it's a 138. He didn't say what it included.

If a mechanic is advising you have it done, I would have it done, if you think he is just saying it to get some work then go to another garage and see what they say.

500 is alot, phone around I'm sure you will get it done cheaper than that, but not buy much, if you don't get it done your be looking at alot more than 500 when it goes

Just done mine on my 138 cost me £120 for the water pump, gates cambelt and tensioner. However my engine was out of the car so was easy to do. They are abit of a pain because of the lack of space. there's a how to on here somewhere if you want to do it your self.

I'm not doubting the integrity of the mechanic, however what bugs me is the idea that it 'may' need to be done. I don't like the idea that I'm forking out £500 for something that might not be necessary.

Its a gamble when you buy a car with no history, if the belt slips or snaps then its alot more for a rebuild.

Mine snapped.

If it hadn't been under warranty it would have been £2k for an engine rebuild.

It may or may not need to be done because there is no service history, by the time it is stripped down and looked at you may as well replace the belt it's only around £40.

To be honest, looking at the age and mileage I would assume it's either been done once or not at all - highly doubt it will have been done twice unless it's had one very careful owner but then it would have service history with it.

If it's been done once at let say at 60k 5 years ago, then it still needs replacing now.

If it's never been done it needs replacing ASAP

Either way it needs doing.

I thought it was 80k miles or 5 years, whichever comes first on a gti.

Expect to pay around £300. £500 is expensive.

It cost £900 as it had been a cat D writeoff when owned by the Met Police.
