#1: i brought a crappy unreliable french piece of sh*! Author: riddler118, Location: United Kingdom PostPosted: Tue Jun 19, 2012 2:02 pm

hi
well im pretty new here but looking for some sound advice from some more experienced drivers
i currently own an 03 reg 206 1.1 with 55000 miles
my problems started the other day with some funny knocking slipping noises and to cut a long story short ended with the AA being called saying i had a misfire on 2 cylinders and needed a new coilpack
after getting a friendly neighbour mechanic to look at it he also suggested a new water pump and thermostat
the end result is after installing the thermo and coil pack the car wouldn't start and after further tinkering it was found the head gasket had gone and oil and water was mixed everywhere.

now i have brought the parts to repair head gasket but on taking engine apart have found it to be fuc$%£
question is where can i buy a reasonably cheap engine that hasnt been flogged to within an inch of its life
many thanks and sorry for the long read
also im not wanting to scrap it as ive just started to pay for my custom interior and decals etc

thats a shame mate i got ripped of when i bought my golf, had nothing but problems.

best place to find a engine would be ebay or scrap yard, a good mechanic could fit an engine in 1.1 pi** easy, take a mechanic with you when buying an engine don't just go off someones word and get as much info on it as you can!

on a side not if you want to buy a 1.1 mines up for sale Very Happy

good luck with the car mate

You could swap the engine yourself as it's a very light engine.

The price u have paid says it all, if you had inspected the car u would of noticed that car head gasket was on its way out,

Dont forget before the lump goes in its a good idea to replace the timing belt kit & water pump & budget for a clutch kit just in case as well.

i brought the car from a lass at work who was going to work in spain for 6 months and didnt want to leave it standing she didnt even know how to open the bonnet as it had allways been serviced at dealers has 2 previous owners both female and a full service history so seemed like a real bargain
but now starting to feel like i been kicked in the nuts by a 20 stone rugby player lol

3 previous owners & all female - id get a clutch kit on the shopping list to Rolling On The Floor Laughing

To ruin a TU1 lump in 55k miles is some going, there normally bulletproof due to the stone age design ( apart from the head gasket )

TU engine design is older then 85% of the members on here Laughing

am having a look about at the moment on the bay but prices vary drastically
suppose its just a learning curve just a shame im having it before i have even passed my test

Plenty of TU1 lumps around, they have been used in lots of different Peugeot / Citroen cars over the years.

Some early Citroen C2 & C3 also used basically the same engine BUT try & get one from a multiplexed 206 to make things easier.

Timing belt kit & water pump. clutch kit if it needs it ( there cheap & seeing as the box will be of the engine its just silly not to change it )

Then just give it a service, its a TU lump there simple / cheap to do.

I won a tu5 for 5 quid on ebay which was nice. Can i ask what makes your engine f****d? As i very much doubt it will be

im not really very car savvy but when we looked at pistons they were raised and chipped dont think my neighbour is trying to con me as he only charged 4 bottles of newcastle brown ale for a days work
whole inside of engine had water and oil mixed into the 2 big holes under gasket

My mate is looking to offload his 1.1 as his gearbox is on the verge of going bang. Pretty sure the engine is pucka though. I can ask him what price hed let the car go as a whole if you want? It also has some 180 alloys on it, they are kurbed to hell but would come up ok with a refurb!?! Where abouts in the uk are you?

I paid £150 for a 1.1 engine with 42k on it from a good genuine scrap yard. All the engines I saw on eBay were a rip off or high mileage.

Do not be harsh on yourself. Anyone who has bought a significant number of cars will have bought a pup at some stage even experienced mechanics and at today's prices £700 can buy you a nice car so don't think for one minute it is your own fault. However, if you are inexperienced, an AA or independent check is worth it before buying a car.

My daughter has a 2000 1.4 GLX, Indigo blue, sun roof and only 58,000 miles and we paid £800 for that. It is a very pretty car, immaculate interior (no burns, wear or large holes for speakers) but there are one or two car park dings. It will need a clutch soon but I knew that when we bought it.

However, we saw some real junk with things like filler in sills that had been sprayed over, mayonnaise on oil filler, oil in water header tanks and interiors like a dog kennel before finding this one. One guy even described the car as serviced less than 20 miles ago yet the oil was like tar and the oil filter was a lump of rust - god knows how long that had been on the car!

With your car it sounds like your cambelt failed if there were marks in the pistons and that can be pretty terminal to your engine. Find a good engine and enjoy the car - despite my distaste for anything that is not a classic Alfa I have been quite surprised by the 206 and think it really is quite a nice car.

just a quick update

today i sourced an engine from a 206 with 43000 mile one owner from new (now deceased)
got it for a bargain of £210 delivered including everything but the alternator and starter motor and he threw in the clutch and a rear windscreen wiper
managed to hire an engine crane for Monday so hopefully all goes well
just wondering if there is anything else i might as-well get while i am spending money

personly i would also do a service on it at least do the oil and filter its worth doing the cambelt and pump now as then you know its all ok for a while and easy to do while engine is out of the car.

well finally got the car running again after just over a week but seems to go like sh£t off a stick dont know if this is due to me driving a heap of junk before or a different engine sure i ordered a 1.1 lol
the whole job has ended up costing about 500 including labour which i think is quite a fair price and i even had some change to buy some Bosch aero-twin wipers
