Cv boot

Does the outer cv joint just need a few love taps with a mallet to separate it from the shaft? Boot split tonight and got grease everywhere. Only realised when I hit the brakes at 60mph and the car pulled violently to the left! Verdict drivers disk covered in cv grease!!!
