Yesterday i had the cam belt & water pump done the garage filled the anti-freeze up. phoned me to say it was done. when i got there they were still working on it they asked me if i've heard the fans work since i've had it (which is 9 weeks) to which i said no as they had run it up to 90 degrees and the fan hadn't cut in.

it was ok to take away i've rebooked it in next wednesday for them to have a look at the fan but a guy at work said he could have a look before then. i'm hoping it's just a switch thats gone.

Could be fan-rellays (front grill above bumper), or fan motor itself, or wiring, or fuse, or gremlins.

Also note some versions of ECU software do not switch-on fan until 95 C or even more..

Its a diesel, they run cooler then petrol engines anyway so the cooling fan hardly ever gets used.

Quick update last 2 days the garage have had the car in all day yesterday was on the computer but by for some reason at 1:50pm they rang me saying the thought it was the resistor. as the every time the tried to operate the fan by the computer all they got was a clicking sound.

But didn't have the time left to get to it so asked if i wanted to pick the car up and drop it back today which i did. Now today they had the car in at 8am, by 4pm still had no news so went down and they had changed the resistor but still same problem, they have the car overnight to get a early start again on it.

The 2 relays are the problem, one has blown the other has a broken pin.

Have they checked the state of the relays and the wiring to them? They can get very crusty and corroded behind that cover.
