GTI Gearbox
-> 206 Problems

#1: GTI Gearbox Author: RMS-GTI, Location: Hemel Hempstead PostPosted: Fri Jul 20, 2012 3:49 pm

Seems my return to 206 GTI ownership isn't going to be as simple as the first one I had...
I picked my car up two weeks ago, and for whatever reason- it has now developed a terrible whining between 1500-2000 rpm accelerating and decelerating in 2nd and 3rd.

Is it worth investigating, or is a replacement going to be the easiest and cheapest option? I see them on eBay around the £125 mark, but how much am I going to be looking at for a mechanic to actually swap it?

Does 206info have an independent mechanic everyone likes to use?

Any help appreciated

In terms of replacing what's wrong, or to replace the whole thing?
Thanks

Just had a quote from a place called PugsRUs in Reading for the supply, and fit of a 2nd gearbox and supply and fit a new clutch and oil for £400. Sounds bloody reasonable to me?! Anyone used these guys or heard of them?

Way cheaper to replace then! Had another reply of 250 to fit with new clutch so around 400 again when I have sourced a box. Think I'll give these chaps in Reading a shot!!

Yeah I had Wondered this but if they supply as well surely some responsibility rests with them to make sure it's ok?

you better ask them.

without stripping the box it is very hard to tell if it is good or not.

May have found a better option anyway- found a place that will supply a completely remafactured gearbox with a 12 month 24k warranty- fitted for £420. At least I know the box will be a good one. Only thing they don't change is the clutch but at 43k old I doubt that is too much of an issue.

i personly would do the clutch (full kit) at the same time as you will be pi** off if you gotta take it all apart again in 6 mths to do a clutch.

Yeah you weren't too far off. Such a shame the gearbox has broken it is such a mint example other than this! Oh well, £420 fitted for an essentially new gearbox is cheap in my book anyway. My C4 VTS clutch kit cost over twice that :-S
