#1: 206 Battery Warning Light / Engine Whirring - Video Included Author: Pd9ph, Location: StrathclydePosted: Sun Sep 02, 2012 7:50 am ---- Hello all, Looking for some information and help here. I have a Peugeot 206 GT 2.0 (1999 V Reg) and just recently over the last 3 days the battery indicator light has came on. Until this morning the light was on constant until I took the car over 3000 RPM then the light would go off, however, as soon as it dropped under 3k RPM the red battery light appeared again and I lost power to my centre console, every time I go under 3000 this happens. Now this morning I went out to video this and sitting stationary I revved over 3k and the light stayed off. What could be the problem here - Loose connections?? There is also a strange whirring noise coming from the engine, belt wheels - Faulty belt, tensioner, alternator? Any suggestions, guidance and advice is appreciated.

I'll be doing this myself however not attempted a tensioner and belt change, and I may as well do both when I have the belt off. I'm assuming a bolt to remove tensioner and replace the unit as a whole? Then belt on and ajust to suit new tensioner?

Had a good opportunity look under the car this afternoon when I jacked it up, the belt seems to be in okay condition and pretty tight, if classed as loose should there be a whole lot of play in it or just a little - I'm unsure of the tension levels and what they should be. A few months back I had an issue with oil leaking into the alternator (leak now fixed) so this could be the problem in the alternator failing. Also what sort of engine does the 2.0 Grand Tourisme have? For the life of me I can't find any info? Help on alternator part numbers for a 1999 GT would be useful for me to track down a replacement!
#8: Re: 206 Battery Warning Light / Engine Whirring - Video Incl Author: Deckchair5, Location: Bath UKPosted: Sun Sep 02, 2012 4:10 pm ---- As your car is telling you running voltage low I would do some running voltage checks as a simple battery to engine earth poor contact would give your symptoms.
Disconnect any power hungry extras if you've installed any aftermarket sound systems
With engine running
Check the voltage from batt + to shiny engine earth. Around 14v ideal
Check it with HRS and headlights on - make sure it's still above 13v
This shows your alternator is producing power
Check from batt- to an engine earth ideally near 0v with engine running and electrical loads on. This will check your battery earth line connections
Then with engine off for an hour, check the residual battery voltage to see if the battery is failing. You want above 12v
Your alternator sounds as if it's working overtime on the video to keep the battery voltage level up but below 3000rpm power voltage is dropping below minimums. So a bad battery or poor battery connections, especially earth lead connection from battery to engine will mean poor battery charge voltage
Give it a try as a bad earth lead connection would be a very quick and cheap fix

If the alternator wasn't working then the warning light wouldn't go out above 3000rpm
Either the battery is not keeping charge, isn't getting a full charge, is being discharged with a load or the alternator isn't giving full voltage.
You need to investigate which using method as stated above otherwise you could change the alternator and still have exactly the same fault

Side note, why is your engine temp 90, but your oil temp 0?

The oil temp gauge is temperamental, I'll replace it shortly. I bought car not long ago (April) so steadily fixing all problems. So far I've replaced the back axle, break lines, exhaust secured, reclamped and got the radio, cd changer operational and upgraded the speakers operational. Replaced parcel shelf back to OEM as it was cut with 6x9's installed. No amp, or sub but I assume one these were previously fitted. I will fit new reluctor rings in the next couple of days to repair the ABS issue / light.
Also have a leak in the power steering system. I can't see where it's dripping from had a look to try and locate the leak when I had the car up yesterday, seems to be coming from behind the pipes at the back of the engine and dripping down onto the subframe. But thats a matter for another day.

sensor I believe. This could easily mean bad earth on some part of the block/gearbox as deckchair5 has said, or short to earth of the sensor wire.
Is your oil temp gauge working?
EDIT: corrected to oil-temp not engine-temp.
Do GTi's flick the pointer normaly?

I have a problem however, what alternator do I buy, there seems to be a lot of 206 varieties. Car is 99 Grand Tourisme 2.0. Part number would be helpful as I'd like to get this on tomorrow.
