Noise coming from ECU area hours after ignition off

#1: Noise coming from ECU area hours after ignition off Author: Roland2000 PostPosted: Thu Sep 27, 2012 6:51 am
    ----
Just trying to get to the bottom of a new problem I'm having with the girlfriend's car - 2000, 1.6, 8v petrol.

There's a sound that develops after 10-20mins running time that seems to be around the ECU area if not the ECU itself. Sounds at first like a pump sucking air and quite load at first but after ignition switch off eventually dies down to a more electronic sound, a bit like an old modem noise. Even after ignition off this goes on intermitently for a couple of hours before it stops completely. I've even disconnected the battery and it still carries on!

I'm not very mechanical so fear doing more harm than good but I've had a good poke around the ECU and pushing, jiggling and squeezing it does seem to make it stop, if only for a while.

Not sure if it's a coincidence but I changed the spark plugs and brake fluid at the weekend just defore this noise developed.

Any help would be VERY gratefully received. Don't mind trying some basic fixes myself but mainly wanted to go to the garage armed with a likely answer to what's up to avoid getting ripped off.

Can you describe the sound more, clicking, hissing, popping?
When it's making the noise can you feel anything near/on the ECU? Airflow, vibration?

It's a constant tone, no clicking or popping. Sounds like a pump that's sucking in air or an elecrtonic eeerrr...eerrr...eerrrr sort of thing that's on and off every few seconds. I know that's maybe not much use but hard to describe.

Forgot to say that the car drives fine and haven't noticed any elecrical problems so only symptom is the noise. Tempted to ignore it but these things usually snowball if left.

There are relays under the ECU. could be those.

If it aint broke why bother fixing it? Just do a volt drop test on the battery to see if the battery is being drained over the course

Otherwise why worry?

You need to save it to another site and post a link to it ...

This is it just after ignition off...

and again an hour later when the sound isn't constant like before and seems to stop for a short while after jiggling with the ECU.
