#1: 206 GTi 180 OEM+ project Author: LoftyGTi6, Location: StourbridgePosted: Sat Oct 13, 2012 1:38 am ---- Morning Guys,
I collected my new car last night, a 2004 Agean blue 206 gti 180. 2 previous owners, standard (ish) with SP pack from new.
I did a deal on my recently restored 306 GTi-6 which has been featured in the PSOC Torque mag a few times.
Initial impressions are quite favorable, some questionable styling "improvements" have been made to the 206 over the years, worst one being Lexus rear lights which are so bad they make the Baby Jesus cry, they will be changed for some nice mint OE phase 2 rears asap. Other external mod is the morettes on the front. Dont like them, so they will be going as soon as i can find a minty mint set of OE crystal lamps to fit.
Its quite a different car to the 306, power delivery is much different, although overall performance seems the same, interiors a deffinate improvement, much more modern with loads of toys and gizmo's, ride is hard, and there's loads of rattles which i'll chase down over the next few weeks.
Recent work on the 206 includes a beam rebuild, new rear calipers, discs/pads and back plates, A/C pipes and a lovely refurb on the OE Vortex alloys. Cheap tyres all round which will be changed in due course. Just had a new middle and back section of the exhaust as well.
Couple of issues i need to sort, the climate control works fine, the central screen lights up fine but the buttons on the unit are all in darkness. Is that a bulb issue behind the panel or is the panel shot?
I'll get some pics up over the weekend, then its in at the deep end on monday as i'm booked on at Donington Park for a trackday with it!!! Got a set of DS2500 pads to fit later today and bed in ready for then.
Matt

Very true, thankfully the times gone by when 3 spoke alloys and tiger stripes was the "in" thing!
#7: Re: 206 GTi 180 OEM+ project Author: Edward, Location: In the garagePosted: Sat Oct 13, 2012 9:53 am ---- The stripes on certain cars still look cool...in a retro kind of way.
#8: Re: 206 GTi 180 OEM+ project Author: LoftyGTi6, Location: StourbridgePosted: Mon Oct 15, 2012 2:55 pm ---- What a day, was at the circuit at 7am to grab a garage as the weather looked changeable, so after signing on, the track was opened at 9am (open pitlane format), was out there straight away, on the 17" wheels with questionable road tyres on.
As a comparison Rich was there in his stripped out rallye, caged, new r888's, decat and stainless exhaust, lowered and uprated suspension.
Power wise the two cars are identical. Torque wise the 206 has the legs out of the hairpin, but in the faster stuff, Rich was edging away. Before the haters start - bear in mind the 206 is fully trimmed and on chinese rubber...
After about 7 laps (full international circuit) Rich's oil temp was 140c+, the 206 sat at 100c all day long, so i could stop out for much longer.
In the morning i changed wheels to some 15" GTI6 Steelies, with trashed r888's on, just to see if it made a difference, and yes it did. Acceleration was much better, and even though they were well past their best, they gave much better grip over the new road tyres. So there is plenty of potential there!!!
Suspension wise the 206 is tired, so thats where the money will be spent next. The shagged 888's are being replaced with Federal 595 RS-R's in the near future and im looking at some coilovers for the front and some uprated dampers for the rear. Bushes at the front end will be changed for uprated ones and that should be it.
The weather had a turn for the worse after lunch, with rain most of the afternoon, the chinese tyres were tbh, worse than s**t, quite comical if im honest. It was loos central, at least it gave me an idea of what the chassis was like past the limit.
We gave it neck at 4pm and headed for home. I managed 154 miles on track today, and used about a tank of fuel and a 20litre jerry can, still got a 1/4 of a tank left, so better on fuel than the 306 also.
Just sorting some pics out now, and some video footage i shot off both mine and rich's rallye.
#9: Re: 206 GTi 180 OEM+ project Author: spike_202, Location: West midsPosted: Mon Oct 15, 2012 4:03 pm ---- Glad it went well mate looks like you had fun, what makes you want coilovers?
#10: Re: 206 GTi 180 OEM+ project Author: JamieM, Posted: Tue Oct 16, 2012 11:51 am ---- Looks like a great day out, I'm thinking 15's on mine when I change rims. Originally wanted 16's but I think 15's will do the job and tires will be cheaper lol.
Was the Rallye 16v'd?
#11: Re: 206 GTi 180 OEM+ project Author: LoftyGTi6, Location: StourbridgePosted: Wed Oct 17, 2012 4:36 pm ---- Im still researching the best option for track / fast road suspension for the 206. I ran Bilstein B8's and Eibach springs on the 306 which i thought was a excellent compromise for both occasions. Is it a similar train of thought on the smaller 206?
Quality is important, some of the coilovers ive seen are almost too cheap to be true?? Are they rubbish that will last 12months then fall apart?
Anyway, back to the 180. My mate Mark sourced me a set of mint phase 2 Valeo OE crystal lamps for the front of a 20k mile late breaker, so this evening i carefully removed the morettes and fitted the correct lamps, with new bulbs throughout. The grille was refitted properly with the little hockey stick clips that always break, replaced with new Pug ones.
Looks loads better now.
Next job is to replace the broken o/s/f fog light and renew the orange capless bulbs in the side repeaters.
Oh, and the wiper arm decided to drop off as i was shutting the tailgate, so ive got a new arm and blade from pug, just need to carefully remove the centre of the old arm off the motor splines as its stuck solid.
The fun of old pugs eh!!
More pics over the weekend
#12: Re: 206 GTi 180 OEM+ project Author: Schumi, Location: Istanbul / TurkeyPosted: Thu Oct 18, 2012 3:05 pm ---- If you want decent coilover first all of go AST Sportline 2 or Sportline 1. If thats over your budget like me go over Bilstein B14. You will love it. But Bilstein B8 and eibach also fine.
#13: Re: 206 GTi 180 OEM+ project Author: LoftyGTi6, Location: StourbridgePosted: Sat Oct 20, 2012 10:04 am ---- Been tinkering away on the little s**tter this week, replaced the bulbs in the climate control unit so now you can see where the buttons are, replaced the 3 bulbs in the MFD display and the ashtray also.
Internally there's still more work to be done, the height adjuster on the driver seat is worn, so to fix it in its lowest postition, im after a base model 3dr drivers runner to swap over in time. After that its a set of tailored mats and a new gear knob and its done.
Externally, ive replaced the questionable morettes with mint phase 2 crystals, all new bulbs and cleaned up behind them, fitted a set of contoured genuine Pug mudflaps and replaced about 6 broken arch fixing clips with new ones. Managed to get the rear wiper changed, had to get the dremmel out on the siezed alloy "collar" which was stuck to the splines, new one went on easy enough.
Next job is the replacement of the drivers foglight as the upper fixings have gone awol, then get it ready for some paint in the new year.
Mechanically i'll be going down the route of Bilstein B8's and eibachs on the front, which should lose 30mm off ride height as well, and some B8's for the back. The rears already low enough, so will be left alone to see how its sits.
Theoretically that should be it........ LOL
I'll get a seperate for sale thread going for the Morettes and Lexus lights in due course.
Lofty

Just had a look at the special tuning website (assume thats the right one Edward??), 23mm t/bars £438 plus the dreaded.... Eeek!
Is there another source of larger diameter Torsion bars, like on a 306 where you use xsara vts bits???
Cheers for the kind comments as well folks.
#18: Re: 206 GTi 180 OEM+ project Author: Edward, Location: In the garagePosted: Sat Oct 20, 2012 2:02 pm ---- Try some 21mm bars them. Too cheap to ignore. A step in the right direction.

Thanks fella
I'll see if I can source them cheaper but I'm going to get some hate hearing stones flying up knowing they're probably hitting my paintwork lol.
#21: Re: 206 GTi 180 OEM+ project Author: LoftyGTi6, Location: StourbridgePosted: Fri Oct 26, 2012 1:30 pm ---- My new BNIB Pug fog light landed today, so simple old me thinks, "yeah 5 minute job that...." Once id got the wheel off, arch liner out, washer bottle out could i actually fit the damned thing!!
Good news is its not crusty underneath at least.
Did my usual colouring of the front fogs yellow, so at least it looks like a carbon copy of the wifes 206 now lol
Waiting on the V5 to come now so i can get my private plate put on it, then start buying some stuff after payday.
#22: Re: 206 GTi 180 OEM+ project Author: LoftyGTi6, Location: StourbridgePosted: Sat Nov 03, 2012 4:27 pm ---- Got the original "sport" lower bumper grille on this afternoon, general internet forum opinion was the bumper HAS to come off.. meh, goes on just fine with the bumper in situ, lots of skinned knuckles but fits fine and looks 100% better than the SP alloy grille IMO. Next job will be to replace the bonnet vent with a normal plastic GTi one. Both SP parts will then be sold on.
Then fitted the foglight covers, major faff, had to jack the front up, remove the splash shields and unbolt the foglight, fit the cover then refit. They fit ok and look very discrete, just hold water drops between the cover and the lamp when you've washed the damned car!!
Gave both the 206's a quick wash and heres how they look.
Next up suspension work over the next few weeks, along with a n/s driveshaft seal as thats leaking ive noticed as well.:driver:
GTi180 Specific Eibach springs will be here on Monday then i'll get the Bilstein B8's on order.
#23: Re: 206 GTi 180 OEM+ project Author: LoftyGTi6, Location: StourbridgePosted: Sun Jan 06, 2013 7:47 am ---- Not done a fat lot to the 206 over the xmas break, i did change the heater matrix as it was starting to "sweat" a bit, with the odd whiff of coolant in the cabin. Piece of cake to do, took just over an hour start to finish. Used a New Genuine Peugeot matrix and plastic link pipes to the bulkhead, so thats another job done.
I'm amassing parts in the garage at the moment, have a new set of Eibach springs, Janspeed exhaust system, K & N Panel filter, and some Bilstein B8 dampers for the front and rear.
I'm also needing the following...
2 x sets of OE 16" nimrod alloys for track use
spare wheel cage and fittings - may as well fit one when the janspeed goes on
Once the works done, i'll be stripping parts of the engine bay out to get painted/powdercoated then some exterior paintwork to keep me busy.
Booked up to do a two day trackday at Spa-francochamps in Belgium, followed by a day at the Nurburgring (all in June) so thats to look forward to as well.
#24: Re: 206 GTi 180 OEM+ project Author: LoftyGTi6, Location: StourbridgePosted: Sun Jun 23, 2013 4:30 pm ---- Bout time i got my ass into gear and did some work on it, apart from just driving the damned thing.
I'd been collecting new suspension for the s**tter since Christmas, and the final pieces arrived this week. So we have got...
Bilstein B8 Front dampers
Bilstein B8 rear dampers
Eibach GTi180 specific springs
New drop links x 2
New top mount bearings x 2
New suspension top mounts x 2
Mark (1600i) offered to give me a hand round his this afternoon - in other words he'd get on with it and i'd stand around farting and trying not to get in the way LOL!
We soon discoverd the old stuff was, shall we say a tad worn?
Utterly f**ked more like. Top mount bearings had fell apart and the shockers were the originals, saying that the ride was ok, and the steering wasnt overly heavy, mad really. The original springs were quite crusty as well.
All built back up quickly and expertly by Mark, and refitted no probs.
The back shocks were also original and again, equally tired, and with the benefit of air tools, both rear dampers were fitted in less than 5 mins.
While the wheels were off, i decided to remove the SP pack wheel arch extensions, as in my eyes they make the 206 look even worse than normal, so they came off no bother, and make it look loads better.
Some pics.
Before (with arch on, and OE ride height)
After (no arch and with Eibach 25mm lowering springs)
Some of the car with the s**tty SP bits now gone...
The Janspeed Exhaust
The Hecko wind deflectors
As some will now, the "sporty" 206's came with the alloy finished fuel cap, now depending on body colour, they either blend in, like on the wifes Silver one, or stand out like an inflamed clitoris on the darker ones, like my Aagean Blue ones.
So, not been a fan of it, I stripped the cap from the inner workings, bunged it in the sink and scrubbed it with Fairy, dried it and then scotchpad'd it up in readyness for for Primer
Etch primered it up
Painted it with 4 coats of Halfrauds finest Aagean Blue
4 coats of Halfrauds Laquer
Flashed it off with the hot air gun, then bunged it in the airing cupboard overnight to dry fully.
Refitted this morning, quite pleased with it.
So...
Before and after
#25: Re: 206 GTi 180 OEM+ project Author: LoftyGTi6, Location: StourbridgePosted: Sun Jun 23, 2013 4:31 pm ---- Just come back from 5 days in Europe, done approx. 2000 fairly hard miles, encompassing a few days in Spa-Francochamps, track day on the legendary F1 circuit with my mate Ben (e46 M3), then a day in Germany at the Nurburgring, before some general knocking about sight seeing, and enjoying the unseasonally very hot weather.
Journey down to Spa was uneventful, car was averaging about 39mpg at a steady is 85 - 90 mph cruise. Seats are comfy, the wind deflectors work a treat, you can have the windows all the way down at motorway speeds without ripping your head off in the breeze.
The trackday on the Monday was ace as usual, some serious machinery there, and the weather was awesome, just kept getting hotter and hotter, reached 38c in the afternoon. Tyres were being torn to bits and Ben killed a nearly new set of 18" Michelin Slicks by tea time. I was the official photographer/video man as per normal!!
The air-con on the 206 decided to play French and ran off for the hills on Monday, meaning we fooking cooked like baked potatoes from then on, typical mardy French heap!
Tuesday was even hotter, we saw 41c at lunchtime as we were heading for the Nurburgring for the evening session. 206 was driving well, the flowing roads round there really suiting it and we hit the track at 530pm.
Car was going really well, the suspension mods made such a difference from the last time it was on track, much flatter and predictable and the suppleness over the bumps is amazing.
Did 3 hard laps, passed loads of stuff, got into a groove, lap 4 was almost the downfall, halfway round, got the EML on, a misfire and "anti-pollution" fault on the dash. No overheating or smoke, so must be electrical.
Sure enough the coil pack had failed..... Got back to the car park, whipped it off and let it cool. Once it was cooler it started fine, but 3 miles down the road, as soon as it got warm, it misfired like a b**ch. Bear in mind we were 80 miles away from Spa, we had to think fast. We settled on propping the bonnet open on a box of brake pads, cable tied everything down hard and set off, the extra air over the engine bay almost kept the misfire at bay all the way back :lol
Next morning saw me in the Pug dealership in spa, with the part number off servicebox (that took some explaining in broken French where it had come from) to order the coilpack.
Fitted Wednesday afternoon and its a ripper again!!! Had two of the younger mechanics looking at it in the car park, the service guy said they had never seen an RC 180 before. LOL!!!
So, back home now, got some new wheels coming next week, so i'll update with pics of those on the car in due course, and im uploading some Spa pics now.:thumbsup
Some pics from Spa....
And a few from the Nurburgring..
The next few weeks should see some decent changes for the Pug, got some new bespoke wheels coming, and finally some detailing of the arches and running gear will start at last.
The 206 180 come with some delightful 7"x17" five spoke alloys from the factory, which to some look ok, but the general opinion is that they ride and handle better on smaller wheels, in fact they even look better, I feel the car as standard looks "overwheeled" for a small motor.
Hence looking at 16"s for the car. Normal GTi 206 16" nimrods would have been the obvious choice but for future brake upgrades, the Nimrods don't allow for much room for big 4 pot conversions.
So, I spoke to Team Dynamics about some pro race 1.2's, as they are only up the road from me in West Bromwich, they don't do the correct ET28 offset for mine so id have to go for ET25 as a compromise. They were also quite expensive, even for a trade purchase.
Step in Compomotive again. I've known the owner of Compomotive for a number of years, and had approx. 6 sets of wheels, so when I rang regarding some more VLM's (like I had on the Astor 6), he said machine a set to suit.
Proper ET28 offset, correct centre bore - so no daft plastic spigot rings like the TD's and he confirmed they have never supplied a UK customer with this set up. Few gone abroad, but none in the uk, so unique to say the least!!
Collected them last week, had a set of Hankook V12 EVO's in 205/45/16 as they get great reviews from the Megane RS boys, and were much better affordability for me compared to PS3's.
Fitted up today by my local tyre man, who knows im a fussy f**ker and takes great care with the awkward raised spokes.
There are plans afoot for an AP Racing 315mm 4 pot kit for the front to fill the wheels up before we go hunting for more power....:thumbsup
Apologies for the poor pics, its getting dark LOL!
Same process as a 306 P3 headlamp, warm and separate, paint insides, whack back together and Bobs your Auntys Gimp in the cellar.
Got a few more jobs to do, Fix the a/c as its gone awol, change the rattling droplink, then use it some more. Might get some smoked side repeaters for the wings to replace the white ones, and that's about it.

The masked headlights set it off, Looks basically the same as my old one. Makes me miss it.
Looks like you had fun at the ring!
Hows the engine cover doing? (think it was you I sold it to?)
Hows the engine cover doing? (think it was you I sold it to?)
Hi Luke, yeah it was me!!
It's doing well, going to have to remove it for future trackdays as thinking about it, its like a tea cosy for the coilpack! Simple enough to do then pop it back on for road use.
