#1: 206 cutting out / poor starting! Author: silver_v, Location: Ampshire PostPosted: Sat Oct 20, 2012 7:51 am

Hey guys been a while.!!

2003 1.1 206 keeps cutting out whilst cold or doesn't want to start!
Now I thought coolant temp sensor, unplugged it and the rad temp shot right up, plugged it back in and was fine, so don't think it's that! Engine management light is on so plugged it in. P0420.. O2 sensor..
Has has the O2 sensor probably for ages, but not has rough idling on start up before and not cut out whilst warm weather.
So would the lamda / O2 sensor cause the car to cut out? £70 for a new one don't want to buy and find out its not that.
Cheers

IMO I would say it is the O2 sensor. They have a heating element in them as they don't work when cold. It's probably the element that has failed, so when your car's cold the sensor won't be reading right as the sensor will still be cold causing it to read wrong and causing your car to stall.

As a bodge or test you could get one from a breakers yard and see if that makes things better before buying a new one BUT there's no guarantee that the one from the breakers will be ok.

The P0420 is a cat efficiency warning so it's not saying there is even anything wrong with either of your O2 sensors.

O2 sensor is ignored at start up so that won't cause non starting. Precat O2S is for fine tuning fuel at steady rpm once engine is warm

On the other hand, RPM/crank sensor can cause your symptoms if it's a complete non starter occasionally from cold as the ECU doesn't realise the engine is turning and won't put fuel/ign in until it is

Since I've un-plugged that O2 sensor on the manifold it's been running fine and starting as per normal.
No hiccups and no cutting out.

Strange

Yes, that is odd, because as you've found, you can disconnect the O2 sensor and it won't affect start up. Are you disconnecting precat or post cat O2 sensor? Must be something severely wrong with it or the wiring if it stops an engine starting

Disconnected the pre-cat. (One on top of the mani)
Not cutting out or doing anything stupid now.
Works fine whilst disconnected.

See if you have a short circuit there. It would have to be pretty extreme to stop an engine from starting. You'll need to get it sorted as you will have dire fuel economy and fail MOT emissions
