clutch or gearbox problem?

#1: clutch or gearbox problem? Author: chris_h, Location: uk PostPosted: Wed Dec 05, 2012 4:14 pm

Hi there!

My 1.1 is having some difficulty which in my opinion is a clutch problem, but im not a mechanic so lets see what you chaps think.

Ok firstly, the thrust bearing squeals. easy peasy solution, new clutch kit.
the clutch cable squeaks on its way in and out of the little rubber bushing under the air filter box.

but I am also having difficulty with changing gears, it is a little clunky and can be a bit difficult in putting the gear in (this is not specific to any one gear).

Now then, if i was to put my clutch to the floor and roll the car in neutral, and put 3rd gear in (can be any gear, but for this example lets use 3rd!) and then put it back in neutra (clutch still down)l, and then to 3rd again, and back to neutral and so and and so forth...at some point a nasty little grinding/ gear doesn't want to mesh sound will happen ( you know the sound, clutch aint high enough sound).

Hmmm! it does this with 2nd gear too! about 30 minutes ago in fact, prompting me to write this.

1st gear is almost IMPOSSIBLE to get in until the car has come to a complete STOP.

Now then, in the new year I am going to get a nice new shiny clutch and a gear box oil change, do you think that will solve most or all of the problems I seem to be having?

cheers in advance!

That's perfectly NORMAL as the gearbox just isn't designed for idiots to try & force it in to 1st gear while the car is still moving.

This issue with 1st gear comes up time & again on here & its always down to operator error.

Its either the clutch or your selecting wrong gears at inapproptiate times...like hittin 60then coasting with clutch down and selecting 3rd lets say...even with pedal drilled into floor the car still wont accept bad gear choices...even if it could run at that speed in that gear...if its not suited it will let u know by scraping and refusing the new selection.....similar to selecting reverse while runnin forward at 40???is that what your getting???
I usualy park on flat side road with engine runnin then engage clutch and select first gear then with clutch fully down raise revs and if clutch aint clearing fully the car will move off but it wont if clutch is ok...

As mr Bsi said. & do you keep your car in gear with your foot on the clutch at traffic lights too?

Ok I am going to ignore the fact you just said I was an idiot, the car can also come to a complete stop and still is hard to put into 1st gear, forget my driving style as there is nothing wrong there, i never really try 1st when crawling, just thought would feed that info to you.

Bezford, my gear changing is never inappropriate as i know full well when to change.
lets not forget I did say that i tried 2nd gear last night (again, at the right time) and that horrible grinding sound happened, I had to return back t neutral, reapply the clutch and try again.

I try to put the car in 1st gear in traffic shortly before the lights change, otherwise its handbrake and neutral.

of all the cars I've drivem, any gear stubborness is always solved by reapplyong the clutch . Normal behaviour of a tired=aged gearbox, but people still drive for years even with those

Sounds like your thrust bearing isn't engaging and this engaging properly

NEW to 206info. mind, the whole forum thing is new to me. iv got a 206. 1.4 GLX. im pretty sure the diff has gone as there is no drive in my car, but when in gear, all i hear is a loud clicking noise. i iniitially thought it was a drive shaft problem, but after replacement, the problems still there..

so iv decided.... new gearbox.

im cabable of changing it myself as i have 4 years at college doing motor engineering under my belt.
but something they dont teach you... is what gearbox will fit in its place?

scrapyards want to sell me the same one for £120, but a few other people have offered me different ones. and i know gear ratios and all that, would be different, e.g banging a 1.1 gearbox will make me faster off the line, but lower my top speed. this doesnt bother me,..

but what i am asking on here, is what TYPE of gearboxs will fit my car?! i read somewhere that the gearbox is an MA gearbox.

someone has offered me a 1.1 206 gearbox. and someone else has offered me a 1.4 205.

another question.... mine is a 16v petrol, im not sure what the car was they came off. but would it matter if it came off an 8v?

cheers in advance. Smile
