my 1.4 needs new CV joints - awful knocking on lock.
I have bought 2 new driveshafts and just wondering for some tips.
I know about compressing the springs to ease the balljoints out, but what do I do with this inner bearing??
All tips appreciated.

#4: Re: help with driveshafts please! - and selling (very) soon Author: pug206lx, Location: Taking a gearbox off somewherePosted: Wed Dec 19, 2012 7:07 pm ---- Take the hub nut out before you do anything else, because if you try after you've got the wheel off you either need someone to press the brake pedal or you need an air gun / impact wrench.
The easiest way to get the ball joint out is to undo the bolt, then put a long bar under the car around a chain that goes around the wishbone arm and gently start to stand on the bar to pull the ball joint out, can be done with a prybar but it's a nightmare.
The bearing is held in by two small notches of metal that are sat in a recess that hook over the bearing to keep it in. They run through the bearing housing to the other side where there's two (10mm i think) nuts screwed onto the end. Undo these and the two notches of metal will start to move out of the recess, eventually you'll be able to twist them so that they are clear of the bearing. Then you can start to use a punch and hammer on the gearbox side of the bearing to persuade the bearing out of the housing. (It will take the driveshaft with it, so come out of the gearbox)
When you pull the shafts out of the gear box you'll start to lose oil. The cleanest way to do this is to drain the gearbox before taking the shafts out. You need a square adaptor piece but i've been told that a ratchet's square adaptor will fit into the sump plug so that you can undo it. After you've refitted the shafts you'll need to top the gearbox up anyway if you dont drain it (Filler is behind passengers side wheel arch liner, again a sump plug with a square recess in it).
I've done a couple of clutches on these now and this is from my own experience. It's pretty straight forward to be honest, the bearing and ball joints are the most difficult part.

#8: Re: help with driveshafts please! - and selling (very) soon Author: markysparky71, Location: northumberlandPosted: Sun Dec 30, 2012 1:28 pm ---- started mine today! yes best way to release lower ball joint short scafold tube under wishbone chain wrapped around and a chock of wood inboard end, just stand and it pops out!! mines a 1.4 diesel and exhaust obscures most access so recommend splitting that also. nuts on bearing housen are 11mm you will need either deep socket or ratchet spanner as access is grim. and thats as far as i got!! Had expected shaft to just slide out, but absolutely solid in the housing So waiting another day before going back under and trying again! So waiting another day before going back under and trying again! Dont blame you for selling! mine has got to be the worst car i have ever had number of problems is unreal! jobs still to do replace cat in exhaust rear brake cylinder drive shaft oh and have awful electrical problem which think is the comms 2000 unit !!!!!!!
