Probably a daft question but my mind is very inquisitive at 4am!

Can (well I presume anything is possible, right?) I convert my GTI 180 to automatic transmission for faster shift times, better kickdown etc... ?

What sort of cost in total would I be looking at to do this, any ideas?

Out of curiosity, are there actually any auto-180s around? There are 180s with superchargers, turbo's, cruise control and so on - there must be one that has been converted to an automatic!

Well as far as I know, the GTI 180 is a sports car,so it never come with automatic gearbox,it comes with manual so that you can get the best of it while driving, the driving of an automatic gearbox is poor quality,it's not like imagine it would be,the kickdowns are bad in the AL4 automatic gearbox.

Besides,I don't think it's possible to do,beacause the 180 have about 175 BHP,and there is NO automatic gear box support,or can handle such BHP.so the gear ratio is important.

we will see what others think Smile

would of said this is pretty much impossible! i looked into converting a 206 i bought cheap into a manual as the auto box blew but wasnt worth it so stripped and scrapped it and i imagine doing it the the other way is even harder!

plus why would you want to auto's are lame! you will get quicker shift times with a manual and i always think you lose feel of a car when its auto

Wanting an autobox for quicker shift times on this sort of car basically says you cant drive

Cheers for the replies guys.

It was just a thought I didn't know there were any comparability issues.

My uncle has a Saab 9-5 hot aero and because its an automatic it just flies when the foot is put down. I've noticed that other hot hatches such as the Golf GTI and the Golf R are also auto with more BHP and acceleration times quicker than the 180. Quattro in the Audi's is also the same thing. DSG is meant to be quicker and more expensive again in the VW's which actually acclaims faster gear changes than manuals; and it was just becoming a familiar sight - all being automatics. So I thought why not the 180 - it just made me think!

Don't forget, all top Mercedes, BMW's, Ferraris, Lamborghini's and so on all have automatic gearboxes so they must be more effective. I just assumed that I could fit a competent one to mine, but I guess not. Shows how much I know about cars eh!

I can appreciate your comment Lee, a lot of people like the car for what it is. At the moment though I don't do any track days and I don't race like a d**k so as it is I will naturally not experience the full potential of the 180 anyway. But ill be honest, no I can't drive!

The dsg boxes came after the 180's time but allthough they can make them quicker, for me it just takes away one if the biggest pleasures of driving.

Realistically unlesa your willing to spend thousands upon thousands any autobox you can get on the 180 really isnt going to make it much fun to drive at all or speed it up.

I see. I thought it would be costly anyway tbh.

Have to admit it would be more boring driving without having the gears - probably fall asleep.

But I do like the bit where you brake an it just stops you and secures you in position even on a hill. Especially as my girlfriend cannot do hill starts and keep the car steady on a hill to save her life.

Thanks Lee

If u want quicker gear shift fit a quick shift stick to reduce the free play between gears...like u might see on a rally car...and why do u have a 206 180if u cant drive???surely if u learn on something u wont kill yourself in u will come out a better driver...recommend a polo 1.4 or similar...and u seem young..how do u afford to insure it???Wkbf.

Just get a shortshifter installed, and change the throw length to 5mm Wink

Seriously?!

The only way it might be a bit better is with the new DSG from the newer models in the peugeot range, but even then the price of the conversion would be rediculous, even if you did it your self and worked for peugeot like i do.

But still the ASSITED manual (not auto i will point out) is extremly slow unless in manual mode and even then its slower then changing gear. The AL4 (as seen on 206's) is just f*****g dire, anything above 100bhp and that would probably melt like cheese on a fire

Normal automatic gearboxes and twin clutch gear boxes are completely different things...one makes it slower and the other makes it accelerate faster- if 0.2 seconds matters that much.

They say you learn something every day, well I know what I've learnt today. What I didn't realise is that there are many different types of gearboxes just like engines (AL4/EW04JS whatever it is etc), some are great and some must be shocking. But at least you all answered my question. Thanks! Smile

Aside from that, my 180 is going in for its service and MOT on Monday, be curious to see what I have to pay. Sods law since it's going to a main dealer they will fob me off, at the very least I can see them saying £200 for brake discs and pads and they'll probably find other stuff to replace too!

Why take an old car to a main dealer? This is how people get stung with £600+ bills sometimes.
