I'm stopping helping people who don't put enough information on in the first post.
It's getting like pulling teeth guessing what electrical systems fitted and the full facts of the fault including if anything has been done to the car which may have led up to the fault occurring.

I'm not being funny, it's just a bit pointless asking why something isn't working when it could be any number of things causing it. The more information you can give, the better for getting the correct advice and not having loads of different answers thrown in that have probably got nothing to do with the problem.

Is your car plexed or pre plexed?
Have you been messing with the electrics recently?
Has the display ever worked?
Do the rest of the lights on the dash work?
Stopped working as in doesn't register the mileage or stopped working as in you can no longer see it?

Also note the cars without rev counter the speedo is cable driven. With rev counter and it is electronic. No sure how either signal is converted and sent to the electronic mileometer readout but there is a difference just there.

If you post for help give as much information about your car as you can including, engine size, petrol or diesel, year of registration, what bodges (mods) it has and what you or your ham fisted mates have already tried or recently changed or fiddled with It should also include the symptoms telling us if it is a new and sudden fault or if it is intermittent and at what frequency it occurs and how long it has been doing it. Then be honest about your ability when it comes to fixing it. Do you own a screw driver or spanner and do you know how to use one or are you perhaps a race mechanic for McClaren.

I don't know why there isn't a sticky at the top of this board with the above instructions.

Sorry guys its a x reg 1.4lx petrol every thing else works fine it just the mileage you can not see at all I bought the car like this the other day it is standard car and nothing has been done to it and no one has touched the car to check why they arnt working hope this is a bit better for you

#17: Re: mileometer Author: kandlbarrett, Location: Swindon PostPosted: Mon Jan 07, 2013 12:15 pm

The mileage MAY be stored in the ECU rather than within the dash panel. If that is the case a dash change from a scrapper would fix it. Any one confirm?

The other option, LCD readout change, may be possible and I think there are a few threads on here about that but I don't recall seeing a succesful one.

some one else said probably have to end up changing the dash so probs just end up doing that Sad

Will changing the dash change the recorded mileage or is that stored in the ECU?

If i remember correctly you need to get one of a car with lower millage than yours at the time of swapping.

It's a pre-plex so the new mileage will be what's stored in the memory on the cluster. You don't want to get one with too much difference as the mileage is recorded on the MOT and if you get a one that reads less miles than the previous MOT, you may be asked some awkward questions if you come to sell the vehicle on.

cheers for that onfo mate thank you

Or officially inform the DVLA and they will record that change. Future buyers do get suspicious of things like that though.

Any one got a pic off what dials should be in x reg 1.4 lx as mine and my mates are totally different so I thinking they have been changed for maybe newer ones that why they at not working any pics would be great

#25: Re: mileometer Author: kandlbarrett, Location: Swindon PostPosted: Mon Jan 07, 2013 3:38 pm

1.4LX is speedo, temp and fuel gauge only IIRC. Too lazy to walk out and have a look at my daughters car. If you have a rev counter then it is the wrong cluster.

#26: Re: mileometer Author: Rob206 PostPosted: Mon Jan 07, 2013 4:24 pm

Yes mine as got a rev counter so does this mean I carnt have a rev counter and mileage

Does the rev counter work?

#28: Re: mileometer Author: Rob206 PostPosted: Mon Jan 07, 2013 4:42 pm

Every thing mate except the mileage

#29: Re: mileometer Author: kandlbarrett, Location: Swindon PostPosted: Mon Jan 07, 2013 4:42 pm

I am wrong. My daughters car has a rev counter, speedo, fuel level and temp sensor. I was getting quite confused about dash panels and was thinking of my son's long gone Corsa.

Also I am no longer sure that the speedo is cable drive as that was also my son's old car.

I will do some checking and put the right info here bed soon as up at 05:15 tomorrow.

Deepest apologies.

Haha it's okay mate thank you for trying rather u than me getting up at that time I'm not up till 7:30 lol

If you have the gauges I have described then you have the standard dash. If you have an oil temp gauge then someone has fitted a different dash from a higher spec car.

No got no oil temp so got proper ones in just gotta sort this mileage problem out

Sounds like replacement dash panel. Get a Haynes manual - it is easy to change the dash panel (even without a manual.)

Lower the steering wheel to lowest position. Starting at the bottom carefully prise off the panel surround. A single screw is revealed that holds the dash panel in place.

Thats rich coming from you!!

Milage in a pre plex will show on the dials to whichever is the greatest either on the new dials or ecu.

Basically if you ecu read 90k and new dials are 120k - it will show 120k
Again if the dials show 90k and the new dials show 40k - it will show 90k

Try and get lowest reading dials you can
Hopefully this solves it

That's my daughter's car then; thank goodness as I am not sure I would want the problems that plex brings.

I wouldnt even want to touch the electrics on a plex model

I thought it was just the plexed models that had the anti clocking feature, and pre-plexed showed whatever was saved in the cluster.
