ive got a 1999 1.4i lx, and originally when i got it about a month ago, it was revving up by itself, and would cut out when you went to accelerate, this got worse as time went on, and i read up on it and suspected it to be the idle control valve, so i ordered one of ebay (there £148 off peugeot!) and fitted, disconnected the battery ect to reset the ecu, and all was well it was idling correctly for a couple of days, and then it started playing up, now it idles at 3000 rpm but doesnt cut out when u rev it, it also accelerates when driving without you touching the throttle
any ideas on what could be wrong?

EDIT: some cheap ebay components are notorious for not lasting long! Your saving could have been a false economy. If you end up buying another you don't need to get genuine Peugeot but Facet or Bosch should do the trick.

Equally it could be the car defaulting to unknown parameters. If you search the web you may find what the output voltages of the MAP should be and see if yours is within tolerance.
I guess that some dislodged crap or your recent work could have damaged it.
I only say could be as the car could still have a split pipe or leak somewhere; the MAP may be reading correctly the engine management system is seeing the extra air and the ECU then gives extra fuel to suit.
If it was carburettored instead of injected the first thing you look for when idle is uncontrolled is an air leak.
It could be a sensor or ICV fault or it could as above be a real air leak that the sensors are seeing and giving extra fuel to compensate for.

dan_manu have you had experience of this on a 1999 1.4LX (that is OP car I believe.)

it got to the point that every time i stopped my car would rev to 2500 - 3500rpm then i soon as i touched the pedal it stalled and would take ages to start.
my car would also accelerated on its own and if i tryed to accellerate out of it the car would judder and sometimes stall.
all u have to do to check if its the tempt gauge is remove it , takes 10secs and all it will do is make your car idle s slightly higher at like 1100 revs
jus try it mate whats worst that can happen

i'll try the temp sensor dan_manu, and go from there, where abouts is it ruffly, is it one of the sensors down by the thermostat housing? there's a blue plug and a brown plug, they look like temp sensors?

Does this sensor send the signal to the gauge or the signal to the ECU. If it is the signal to the ECU it is understanable as this being faulty will always make the ECU think the engine is cold so it will throw extra fuel at it.
On these engines there are two sensors. One sends the signal to the gauge and the other sends it to the ECU. The gauge sender shouldn't make a difference but the ECU one will.
Not saying you are wrong - strange things happen.
