#1: 206 Problem List Author: matthewwilson1990, Location: WirralPosted: Wed Jan 16, 2013 1:48 pm ---- Hello all,
I have a 206 1.1 Style (entry level)
I got the car when i was 17 and i am now 22. The car has done 68000 miles which is pretty low for it's age.
However, it has developed a few little niggles. I am reluctant to swap the car (to my parents displeasure) but i would rather fix it that buy a Japanese box for the £4500 that i have.
The problems are as follows (in order of severity IMO):
-there is a clicking noise coming from the engine. This happens when i am in gear but i am decelerating i.e. engine braking. There is no noise in neutral or when accelerating. A local garage says it is a bearing in the gearbox but i think that people on here will be able to inform me correctly of this.
-Cam belt has never been changed (easy fix, just get it changed)
- After i let it stand for a few days over Christmas, it wouldn't start.
-Fob has decided that it doesn't want to work (but i'm sure that i can fix this.
-Headlamp doesn't work (again, easy fix)
Mainly, i'm just after some advice on the gearbox issue. A local garage has offered up to £500 for the car as a p/x. Should i reinvest in another vehicle or get the old girl fixed?
Any help would be really appreciated.
Thanks
Matt

Second hand gearboxes can be picked up for around £100 and can be changed in an afternoon, but with the box off you might as well throw a clutch kit in at the same time.
Cambelt is a very simple job on a 1.1 and the other 3 issues should be easy fixes.
It really is up to you what you decide to do with it, but what I will say is, better the devil you know than the devil you don't.

The only problem is that i have no technical knowledge and don't have the skills or time to replace a gearbox or a cam belt. I just about managed an alternator about 12 months ago but that took about 4 hours as i am a complete novice.
Where can i source a second hand box and how much would a garage cost to replace it?
I have recently changed the clutch so this shouldn't be an issue.

If you have local friendly indy garage they should be able to get it all done in a day, so a days labor tops.

To have a clutch fitted to my old 1.4 it cost around £250 (inc parts, and around 4 hours labour ), the gearbox had to come off for that so expect the same to fit a new gearbox if not a little less.

Don't know how often he comes on info now so this link might be better.
His work is spot on. Used him myself and quite a few members on here have used him in the past.
