Check your battery. Mine is reading 12.24v and I have trouble on cold morning. Just about to change it

What He Said

About 12.6 volt is 100%. It will start to struggle at less than 12.3 volt.

+1 or you have left something switched on.

Note that while 12.6V is correct that is at 20 °C and must be adjusted −0.0235V/°C for temperature changes.

So the maths shows that at 0 deg C the cell voltage (100% charged and good condition) should be 12.13V. Now at 12.13V a good battery only has 50% of its design capacity available despite the fact that it is fully charged.

So if your battery is already in poor condition with say 60% charge available to it then the effect of being at 0 deg C can be enough to mean it won't now start your car.

Charge condition against voltage at 20 deg C:-

Like most things it isn't quite as simple as this but this is a good enough guide.)

All your posts are like this. Are you copying from somewhere or do you have superhuman knowledge? Smile

Tolkienfan001: No; definitely not superhuman but a strong understanding of theory on a lot of subjects backed up by practical experience as well. I then check wiki or similar for the exact details.

As for battery voltages etc. as an apprentice I have also worked in a quarry on Dartmoor and remember learning about SG of electrolyte and effects of temperature on voltage all those years ago. I even did it as an entry in my apprentice log book.

I have been called pedantic more than once though!

From Wiki - "Note that while 12.6V is correct that is at 20 °C and must be adjusted −0.0235V/°C for temperature changes." + the link is from wiki.

Everything before and after that including maths is mine - always loved maths.

Some of my life history:-
In my past life I have done a very wide range of jobs, broad range of skills. Some to degree level and some to City and Guilds.

Mechanical engineering to degree level.
Electronics to City and Guilds 224.
Apprentice at British Rail (showing age) training included carpentry, machine shop work, hand fabrication to within 0.001", electrical installation, welding, tinsmith, painting, coach building, plumbing.
Father was a qualified builder (also part time farmer) so many summer holidays helping there.

Spent many years managing 60 staff who operated and maintained stuff that these people built:-

I didn't work for Plassers but for Amey Rail. Some of the electrical schematics for these machines are over 6ft long!

Bet you wish you hadn't asked!

You say it doesn't start is it turning over but not catching or is there nothing?
