Mines a hdi but I suspect it to be similar

Look at left hand side of engine and you will see a piece of ally sticking out and meeting the inner wing. It's a pain as you have to remove the alloy part of the mount to get at the rubber. Which looks like an old British Leyland gearbox mount on steroids!

Ok found it. Anyway to test it?

I tried rocking it in situ when I got the noise but it didn't locate it then.

Only quick way I can think is to take ecu out of the way, remove the top bump stop and the buffer ( if they are fitted!)

Then you should see a torx head at the top thread. I'd slacken the nut on the mount, carefully jack up the engine, just enough to take the weight and then try and tighten the torx screw on the bobbin. If it moves its come loose. Mine wasn't even half a turn loose but that was enough to annoy the hell out of me at times, plus change suspension bits that were probably ok.

Here's a pic with the ecu removed, bear in mind it's a 2.0 hdi and may be slightly different. The black strap is the top anti bump bracket and the buffer is under it

Ps car isn't rusty, I wax oiled it when it was a month old so it's just muck!!

No probs. cars in bits anyway!

Just remember to jack engine up enough to be clear of the bobbin top, not the top of the threads. This should allow it turn.

Make sure all bonnet fixings are tight also not sure if the bonnet has a pin connection like the doors and boot. If so it could be worn. Been looking for a rattle on mine for nearly a year and turned out to be worn door pins. Wrap some tape around if you find one to see if the noise stops. If so then its probably that. Also found that its hard to pinpoint a noise it might sound like its in the dash but be at the front of the car.

I think my drivers door pin is knocking!

So, I am still working on this!

I have found the ecu box was making a lot of noise and had a lot of movement. This is now sorted.

The coolant bottle was rattling and loose. This is now sorted.

My next item on the list is the cylindrical rod that runs behind the dash for the brake pedal. There is some play in this and it knocks if I move it from left to right. Is there anyway to tighten this? There are some bolts on the passenger side. Not sure if I should mess with it.

Thanks

I'm sure the brake spindle has play in it so you can put the brake lights on without braking to get annoying pricks off your ass.

Ok thanks for that. The knocking seems to have stopped now I have sorted the bits under the bonnet. Smile
