#1: Anyone reconditioned a 206 Rear axle/beam? Author: Werdnal, Location: Cornwall, UKPosted: Mon Apr 08, 2013 8:41 am ---- My 52 reg 206 SW, had the beam swapped on last year for a 2nd hand one. I knew it could work out to be a short-term fix as no guarantee on the used one, and I am beginning to get a slight "bump and grind" from the rear over uneven ground/road humps etc. I kept the old axle that was removed, and have seen the replacement bearing kits on eBay for around £20 a side. How easy a job it is to strip and refurbish the beam? Obviously its already off the car so thats a bonus, and I will get the chap who fitted the last one to put it back on for me if we can recondition it ourselves.
Hubby is a time-served fitter (machine not vehicle) so has some hands-on knowledge, but not sure if it need special tools etc. Any particular concerns or do's and don'ts? Last thing we want it to get it swapped back into the car and have problems with it. Anyone had a go themselves?

The stub pins that the bearings sit on will likely be worn by the time you notice a problem. Replacing those is the issue, and the tooling needed isnt very common. Which is part of the reason why refurbished beams arent cheap.
Having said that, if you've got the old beam there, you may as well take it apart and check the pins. If they are okay, ie not pitted/worn, there's no reason why you cant fit the bearing kits. That job itself isnt complicated.
If all else fails and you intend to keep the car for a long time, just bite the bullet and get a refurbished one.

As stated above the issue is replacing the shafts the bearings sit on. I found a company that sold new bearings and shafts but they had no idea how to replace them.
Be carefull with the bearing kits. Some have plastic races and are just not up to the standard of the ones with metal races inside.
