#1: Replacing comm 2000 unit Author: Markco79 PostPosted: Fri Apr 19, 2013 3:14 pm
    ----
I have the dreaded comm 2000 issue on my 206 gti. The indicator stalk was wobbly when I purchased car and later on inspection was cracked at the base of the stalk. It would wobble back and forth. Indicator would work intermittently. Superglued at base and now indicates. When I stick headlights on they only come on main beam. Can't stick side lights on. Indicators then work intermittently when lights on??

Guessing comm unit is goosed. Peugeot charging £506 for the 6242c6 unit I have. ( I have ESP)

Thinking of buying a second hand unit of eBay or a reconditioned one for £230.

What do I need to do to change myself? Is there not a process for disconnecting battery etc?

I did this yesterday so this is from experience.

First disconnect the battery using the correct method and then wait some time for the airbag system to discharge.

When that's done remove the steering cowling. There's 2 torx screws on the bottom on either edge towards the drivers seat. Undo these, they stay inside the cowling when they're undone. Then simply unclip and remove the cowling.

Remove the air bag. To do this make sure the wheels are pointing straight ahead. Look on the back of the bottom spoke of the steering wheel and you'll see a metal clip in a hole. Get a flat head screwdriver and put it against the clip. You want to push up towards the centre of the steering wheel, it requires a bit of force. After that's done the airbag will pop forward and you can lift it off. Undo the 3 connectors by lifting the tab out and then carefully pulling them off.

Undo the T55 Torx bolt in the middle of the steering wheel by a few turns and then bang on the back of the steering wheel to loosen it. When it moves towards you undo the bolt the rest of the way and lift the steering wheel being careful not to snag the plugs coming off the COM2000 unit.

Next undo the plugs from the back. blue and brown 2 pin one on the edges, a brown one towards the drivers door, a grey one towards the middle and if you have ESP a blue one towards the passenger side.

Undo the clasp from around the com2000 and steering column. Then you need to release 2 tangs, one is on the top to the right and one is underneath, at the back of the com2000 unit. It should then slide off towards you.

To fit the new one, it's really reversal of the removal. The airbag simply pushes back onto the steering wheel. The com2000 can be a bit stiff going back on, but as long as it's lined up right then it will go back on.

Proper gent. Cheers for that.

Did you have one with ESP? Read about re-calibration being needed.

Also how long for airbag to discharge?

I waited about 10 minutes.

My car doesn't have ESP (03 petrol GTI) but the COM2000 unit i fitted is from a GTI HDI 04 that does. It works fine but I'm not sure if it needs reprogramming for the ESP...

What is ESP? How do you know if you have it? And how is it calibrated?

It's electronic stability programme. If you have it then you will have a wee button behind handbrake with a fan shaped pic on it

No that symbol is for the alarm sensor deactivation. If you have esp they'll be a button next to the airbag pass switch to turn off esp.

206 with ESP fitted need the steering angle sensor calibration doing after changing the com2000 as the angle sensor is part of the com unit.

Its also a good idea to redo it when having the wheel alignment checked / adjusted.

Eurocar parts do sell new Valeo com 2000 units, pop in / ring your local branch but be warned they might have to order it in overnight.

A Valeo com unit will fit & work fine & is a lot better quality, just get the correct part number.
