Wrong size tyres fitted...
-> 206 Problems

#1: Wrong size tyres fitted... Author: longshortchris PostPosted: Sun May 12, 2013 12:37 pm

I have owned a 2002 2.0 HDi 3 dr for twelve days now & I realised last week that I have the wrong wheels and/or tyres fitted.

I've checked online & I know I should have 195/55/15 tyres but I don't. The car currently is sporting 4x 205/50/15 tyres on alloys looking something like 307 87 sports wheels, it that make sense?

Why anyone would put on a tyre with a smaller circumference beats me!

But, I want to know, can I just put original spec. 195/55/15 tyres on my current alloys? I haven't measured them just in case someone here know that I can simply swap the tyres for the correct ones.

yes you can...... thing is, Do you need to unless you have worn them out. They have a very similar rolling radius so it wont affect your speedo. I assume they don't rub on your arches so keep em until they wear out

Thanks macj.

I was planning on keeping them until they wear out. The garage did say they had about 4k left on all of them. Then, I'll change them as and when needed.

Being smaller in circumference, by 1cm, means that for every 100 rotations of the tyres, I'm going backwards 3.14 metres. Not literally, but I'm sure you understand wot me sayin'! That's not good for economy as neither is the extra grip.

That's another thing checked off. Only about a dozen to go...

This page says smaller by 1cm (10mm) diameter - note diameter NOT circumference.

www.tyresave.co.uk/tyresize.html

and calculating circumference here

math.about.com/library...ulator.htm

195/55/15 = 196mm dia = 1872.39 mm circumference and
205/55/15 = 186mm dia = 1840.97 mm circumference.

So being smaller circumference compared to old tyres 10,000 real kms will record now record an extra 170kms.

To get a perfect matching circumference the tyre new size in a 50 profile needed to be 215/50/15. There may be many reasons for not doing that like cost, availability or wheel width.

Using pp2000 you can set the tyre size so your speed and mileage is worked out correctly.
