I believe the 1.6i is the 90bhp 1.6, as I own an xsi (110) but do correct me if I'm wrong..

OK, I always get confused what's what. I should stick to 1.4i only really. Smile

Anyway, valve timing absolutely plays a role in mis-firing, esp. as the topic headline describes it.
However if you have 16V with hydraulic tappets (oil opperated) there's nothing that can be adjusted there.

Update:
this morning I was driving to work as usual, came across an old lady in a beaten up mazda, going like 10 mph, so I hit the gas, car went all fast & furious on me, amazing muffler sound, great improvement to gas pedal reaction, I thought I was imagining, so kept on driving, when I came to a clear spot on the road decided to give it another try, hit the gas, freakin' amazing, awesome sound and awesome acceleration. get this Liqui-Moly Gold Label stuff!!!

V9977 I didn't really get what you meant by your link there

Sorry, I thought Liqui-Moly was some additive and I made that thread enquiring about additives recently because I was interested in people's thoughts and experiences with various brands.

Oh, ok, yeah it's an additive, a fuel additive, a very good one for sure Smile

Does the effect last after the fuel/additive mixture is used-up?

Yeah sure, it's not the additive itself which does the trick, it's the cleaning of the fuel system that it performs. it's not like NOS. LOL

I'm not convinced.
Are you still on it or how long ago was it used?

I added it two days ago, 1 container goes into half a tank of fuel. it's highly recommended by mechanics (ones I know and not the incompetent ones..). what it does is remove all the soot and junk from your fuel system, I've hard some people recommending the stuff but I wasn't impressed and was sure it's all placebo mambo jambo, but I was clearly mistaken, this stuff works.

OK.
Keep an eye on it.

I used Shell V-Power Racing (100 oct petrol + cleaning agents) which is meant to perform precisely this.
I put it on mine exclussively for about a year and ahalf. It went like mad with tons of torque, smooth acceleration, responciveness and surprisingly - was more economic (even though alot more expensive per litre) simply because it lasted longer.

However, I found it stresses the engine for certain using it all the time like that, and it quickly went back to normal as soon as I stopped using it. Valves didn't like it at all, but again this was constant use for an extended period of time.

It's obviously a lot more difficult to percieve the gradual 'fade' after it runs-out, than the step-improvement the moment you put it in.

Agreed.. I'll keep an eye on it. also - it's not recommended to use additives persistently as you did, it will harm the valves (as you experienced) and basically every bit of the fuel system which is not made out of steel.. but I can understand wanting the car to feel as it feels after using it, it's kinda like drugs.. (though I never used any...!)
Anyway I'll update on a daily basis so I wont forget the first feeling the additive gave
