#1: horrendous engine noise Author: copey, Location: rochdale PostPosted: Wed May 22, 2013 2:46 pm

don't know if you guys can help bit of a long shot, but on my way to work this morning my engine started making some horrendously loud vibrating noize, rattling like hell sound as though the engine was a bout to fly out of the bonnet.

i stopped turned it off and had a look nothing seemed a miss at all apart from a slight bit of oil around one of the injectors, i turned the engine back on and it was still doing it, revved it a couple of times and it went away, drove it to work fine, drove it home nothing else happened

the car still drives fine, doesn't skip a beat or anything, but im assuming there must be some form of problem for it todo this in the first place

I believe some of your spark plugs stopped which made the engine vibrate, because it's working on 3 Cylinders instead of 4,so wait and see till it happen again, sometimes the coil pack can act up.

Simular thing happened on mine last week, pour a bit of water around the injectors, (engine running of course) if one is leaking you will see bubbles foaming around the injector.
New washer on injector, then was ok.

I had the same problem on my 1.4 hdi two weeks ago, it turned out to be the crank pulley which cost me £63 from europarts .

was about to say the same, don't suppose there's much i can do whilst it isn't doing it.....hard to tell somebody to fix something when it aint acting up

Test it now if i were you, I only noticed mine when i took the engine cover off to do something else. started the engine which was cold, and a right racket was coming from one of the injectors, went quiet after 1 min, i presume pressure had built up. If i hovered my hand over the injector i could feel a gust of air.
Like i said water test will show bubbles.

The signature? Although it is better when the vehicle details are included in the post.

I had the same with mine last month, its like all the rubber bushing within the wheel had worn away leaving the pulley with metal on metal between the inner and outer of itself. Get hold of the bottom pulley, you should feel any play in it.

Does it sound like your driving on a gravel track then someones stuck a plastic washing up bowl under the front of the car and it grinds as you drive along???

I would describe a rattleing noise like if you walked along a length of metal railings with a bit of metal bar.

Very hard to describe noises sometimes, everyone can interprit noises differently, thats why when people post

people can interprit differently.

Does the rate of rattle increase as the engine revs do?or is it constant?
I dare say that there is more to this than just running on 3cyl. but i am not a diesel expert...how would a loose or untight injector cause such a noise???
I beleive you are experiencing"pinking"which is hardly heard of these days but still happens as a vibrating, rattling sound caused by bad fueling/timing if i remember correctly...it is quite serious i think???
