#1: 1.1 spark plug removal Author: westham42 PostPosted: Sat Jun 29, 2013 6:33 am

Hi guys.

Just been outside to change plugs, and can't even get the old ones out. The removal tool feels like it will cross thread them so what can I do?

I have had a lot of cars and done this simple job countless times, so why is this so different? lol

Any help would be great.

Cheers,

Steve.

When you say removal tool what do you mean. Have you already tried a plug spanner (socket) and broken a plug so are now using special extraction tool such as an "easy out?"

Nah mate, just a normal spark plug removal tool, you know, the t shape kind, same as this one:

www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Las...5d3fdee28f

Just doesn't feel right lol

Try a socket plug spanner, short extension bar and ratchet or socket "T" bar. Make certain the socket is the right size and six rather than 12 point.

Personally I hate the type of plug spanner you are using.

Cheers mate, will do.

Have always used a longer type and had enough room for it to fit in there so it's the first time using this kind.

Cheers again Smile

this tool is not gonna do the job,you need a more prof. tool so you can have more power and control over the plugs, and becareful when you do,as you might damage the fixing spot of the plug if it was sized

Make sure your turning the right direction too...Thats anti-clockwise to remove the plug..

I always remember it with clockwise to tighten anti clockwise to anti tighten..some people use righty tighty lefty loosey..

Aye mate, done loads of times so am ok on that, but thanks for posting Wink

Just annoying the tool I bought seems to be crap, as Timon says.

I have rooted through the garage and found a 16mm long socket with the insert and also a ratchet and small extension to fit so should be ok to sort these tomorrow Smile

Thanks for the replies guys, will let you know how I get on.

Steve.

I've found that a flexi extension or knuckle joint makes the job easier on my TU3 lump.

Well, they are all done, apart from the one to the far left as you look at them. The 16mm long socket seems like it ain't big enough and I haven't got a long 17mm to try.

Trip to Halfords or local spares shop soon I think lol

Baffling - has the previous owner put different plugs in for some reason?

Or do I need a thinner 16mm long socket?

Hmmmmmm.

You need the correct spark plug socket.

I find that the sockets are a VERY tight fit into the plug holes. I have a 1/2 inch drive that only fits part way as it touched the head and when it gets to the plug won't go any further. I think that may be he problem you have as you can't get plugs with a 1mm larger socket fitting.

My 3/8 drive plug spanner fits no problem so I suggest you measure or very carefully compare the outside diameter of the plug spanner you are using and make sure its replacement is a fraction smaller.

Aye mate I was thinking that about them not being bigger. Three done one to go, so gonna have to get a thinner socket.

Strange though that it fits all the rest Confused

Wonder how many other's it has caught out in the past? Question

Cheers for your reply mate.

Steve.
