206 1.6 16v Engine Issue..

#1: 206 1.6 16v Engine Issue.. Author: danhodson, Location: Derby, UK PostPosted: Mon Jul 01, 2013 4:36 pm

I posted about this a while ago and the problem was minor.

I'm far removed from knowing a great deal about cars, I can get by though.

Basically I'm having issues with my engine. When driving conscientiously e.g not so heavy footed, I'm having issues with the engine stuttering intermittently. It initially started out when driving at a steady speed in 5th, and would do it 2/3 times on a 25 mile journey down the M6.

Its now doing it regularly across every gear. I've recently had it serviced and the issue seemed to of disappeared, I had a full oil change, new sparks, oil filter, air filter etc. But its came back

Another symptom I'm experiencing regarding this, is braking hard sometimes makes the ignition, bat and oil light come on, I lose power to steering and braking, now it does this for a second or so and the engine reengages. I have on the odd occasion had to dip clutch and physically restart the car.

I had the fault codes read and it only came up with a single misc code, I've not got the paperwork with me but I will find the code when back home next.

My only concern is I could keep throwing money at it and not find out the issue. I'm thinking maybe a coil pack next, just wondered if anyone may of had experience with this..? Question

Sounds like the coil pack to me, same issue a few years back, could be in any gear, and at any random time, all the lights would come on and it would stutter and die.

You need to clean your idle control valve or ICV..get a bucket and some carb cleaner and give it a good going over...you will be surprised at the crap that comes off it..

Are you heavy braking with the clutch on the floor? You should still get vacuum assistance through the brakes as the car should be in gear and turning the engine.
If the engine is turning there's no reason for the oil light to come on either.
Also if the engine is turning over you'll have PAS steering too!

That is a very good question, I'm not 100% sure the oil light comes on if I'm honest, it may be the ignition and battery warning light, I tend to have to concentrate when it happens as the PAS and Braking Assistance seem is vanish momentarily till the engine reengages or stalls.

I think the clutch is usually disengaged in this scenario, not best practice I know, to counter the 'stalling' scenario I usually give it some revs

How old is the car?

Its a 51 plate. I can confirm whilst driving home I was breaking with dipped clutch so no engine braking or forced revs.

my first thought was bad earth, the intermittent loss of ignition and stalling. With the clutch depressed on braking (very bad practice Confused ) it would not have vacuum or steering assistance. Check all battery connections and the one to alternator and your main engine earth points. Failing that it may be an ignition switch fault Idea
