Rough running 180

Hey all,

Ive just got myself a cheap GTI 180 as a bit of a project that was advertised
local

I brought the car cheap with a engine fault but its now its starting to pickle my head

i will explain , the car will start up and run a little lumpy but drive fine

within 4mins or so it will say on the dash display ESP/ABS malfuntion then starts playing up to say cat converter fault and then anti poloution fault this is when it starts to missfire

In the last 2 weeks before i had it, its been to main dealer and had the following parts

new map sensor
vvt solenoid
crank sensor (flywheel side)

Also the guy fitted new coilpack and plugs but still the same

ive had the codes read today and they are as follows


P1336 ?
p0303 misfire cylinder

if you clear them it will drive fine untill next time you start it

Any ideas Sad

does the car have a HID kit installed? I know there's a few people that have put the ballasts near the ECU and its caused havoc with the electrics due to the radiation or something they give off. Probably way off but its the only thing i could think of...

You say you clear it then its ok until you start it?
So as soon as you try to start again it runs like a bag of s**t...and how long will it run bad until these codes show up?is this the four minutes you mention?

Just a quick thing to eliminate would be to remove the ICV..idle control valve..and check it for obvious problems then carefully clean it using carb. cleaner...its best to look on the HOW TO Aforum for the best cleaning method as there's a bit you need to not touch so view the how to first.can you hear the fuel pump priming and running?
Also i would recommend lifting the back seat and blank plate then the pump and housing to check the tank has no dents and to check the tank is free from debris or rust or such just incase its blocking up the fuel system.

Also while your in the tank check the operation of the fuel pump by turning it on but be carefull not to get air into the pump just submerge it best you can while someone else turns the far on...

Post up your findings mate.

No HID kit installed, dont know if it has in the past but no signs of it

Fuel pump is fine and doing its job, do 180 have ICV?

i found this post form a few years ago and its the same as my fault

P1336 Crank / Cam Sensor Range / Performance
Possible causes
- Faulty Crankshaft Position Sensor
- Crankshaft Position Sensor harness is open or shorted
- Crankshaft Position Sensor circuit poor electrical connection
- Signal plate may be damage

P1336 Description
The Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor sends pulses to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) as the reluctor wheel teeth rotate past the CKP sensor. The PCM uses the CKP pulses to synchronize the ignition and fuel injector operation, and to time the interval between each CKP pulse. The PCM determines when an excessive change in crankshaft speed occurs by comparing each new time interval with the previous interval. A misfire causes an unexpected change in the crankshaft speed. A certain amount of acceleration/deceleration is expected between each firing stroke, but if the crankshaft speed changes more than an expected amount, the PCM interprets this as a misfire. The interval between CKP sensor pulses is extremely small.


P0303 - Cylinder 3 Misfire Detected
Possible causes
- Faulty spark plug 3
- Clogged or faulty fuel injector 3
- Faulty ignition coil 3
- Fuel injector 3 harness is open or shorted
- Fuel injector 3 circuit poor electrical connection
- Ignition coil 3 harness is open or shorted
- Ignition coil 3 circuit poor electrical connection
- Insufficient cylinder 3 compression
- Incorrect fuel pressure
- Intake air leak

Symptoms
- Engine Light ON (or Service Engine Soon Warning Light)
- Lack/loss of power
- Hard start
- Engine hesitation

P0303 Description
When a misfire occurs, engine speed will fluctuate. If the engine speed fluctuates enough to cause the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor signal to vary, the Engine Control Module (ECM) can determine that a misfire is occurring.

Still doing it, but no fault code is coming up now. its a very strange one

maybe thats why the last owner let it go cheap

Only thing i can think of that aint been changed is the injectors.

is they any way to test them?

Valve sticking? (compression test will prove / disprove.)
Burnt valve cylinder No3. (compression test will prove / disprove.)
Leaking injector cylinder No3. (Remove and test or swap injectors between cylinder 3 and 4 and see if the fault follows the injector. It might be worth doing the same swap test with the plugs as it wouldn't be the first time a new plug was defective but as the fault was on the car before changing plugs I doubt that the plugs are at fault.)

Macca1411 has given an excellent description of the relationship between how a misfire could cause a crank sensor reading error. From that it would appear that your fault is probably originating in Cylinder 3 misfiring and that also causing secondary but probably false crank position sensor error
