#1: Rear bearing or shock issue? Author: PugJH, Location: NorthantsPosted: Thu Aug 29, 2013 2:42 pm ---- Ok so the knocking at the back still goes on, had a chance to look at it today, nothing I can see would make a noise, but its really loud when driving along especially outside the car.
I jacked the back up and everything seemed ok, when the car is sitting normally if I open the boot and lift and drop the rear (bouncing basically) you can hear a dry knocking sound, which made me think it was the shocks, could bearings make this noise tho? I want to rule it out.
Just f*****g annoyed, also garages around here seem pretty useless, especially the Peugeot specialist.
If the trailing arms have no play (give them a very firm shake when jacked up) and the wheels aren't on too much camber then you can pretty much rule bearings out. + I don't see why it would be a knocking noise unless they were completely ruined.
Shocks sound likely, especially when pushed down there seems to be little dampening of the torsion bars.
Also check the exhaust - so many problems can come from clamps or the system hitting other components.

Before the end bolt on torsion bar was replaced/missing. But that didn't fix it either.
Also the noise it either when lifted right up or pushed right down

Nothing moves underneath, shocks seem solid, no leaking, no splits or anything.
I will get someone to lift and drop while I listen to where it comes from more closely

Not sure how that would work.
When the car is sitting normally I push and it makes the noise.
Without the shocks it wouldn't be able to sit normally for me to push down on it?
Unless I'm wrong?

Undo them and you will see what I mean, could probably just remove the lower bolts and pull them away from the mounting without having to take them off the car.

I shall try it at some point and then do it again and see if the noise it gone. Could it just be that the pin the shocks sit on needs to be greased? It's a real knocking noise which makes me think I should be able to see the problem.
