#1: 3rd brake light dim glow.. help! Author: dafatkid88 PostPosted: Wed Sep 04, 2013 8:45 pm

Hello guys and gals,

I have a 2003 GTi180 which I believe is the plex version, and have just bought an LED ultra 3rd brake light from another member on here and after fitting it have noticed that when the ignition is on that there is a constant dim glow from the LED's, is this a common problem? Or is my car being a pain! The member i bought these from never had this issue

Brake lights light up perfectly fine when pressed, am just left with this annoying dim glow when not being used.. any usefull advice is much appreciated Smile

Is it possible to fit the connector the other way around?

I had a similar problem with LED reversing lamps. Lamp had a dim glow when going forward and worked fine on full brightness when reverse was selected. I just put a resistor in the circuit and that solved the problem.

Not sure why it happens, only thing I can think of is that the BSI sends a tiny amount of electricity out constantly to the lamps, and would normally be soaked up by the filament. LED bulbs take less power to work than filament lamps, so that trickle makes them glow a little bit.

I did think this Macca as when they were on my pre plexxed 206 they worked fine no dim glow but being a multiplexed I wondered why if it would make a difference!

Yep i had the same problem with our 206 (pexed).

We put the LED brake light in and it was constantly on!

I purchased a resistor to go inline, and then when we got our LED rear lamps got another (but it turned out we didnt need the 2nd for them)!

I still have the resistor and fitting instructions if you fancy it? £6 posted to your door!

I have had a led high level brake light fitted to my multiplexed 206 for the last 7+ years & never suffered this issue.

Maybe it's down to the quality of the light unit in question Wink

The unit is an ULTRA LED unit from Ecosse... Had a friend look at it yesterday and he said there is a constant 6v going to the brake light live wire but no other anomalies on any other wiring he looked at... He has suggested putting a 160ohm (1watt) resistor inline with the positive and hopefully it should fix it Smile

I know mine isn't an Ultra & it wasn't purchased from Ecosse.

What does that tell you then Whistle...

Decent quality led high level brake lights don't need resistors adding to them to work correctly on a multiplexed 206 Wink
