#1: Broken locking wheel nut on gti alloy Author: boardinbob78, Location: LeicesterPosted: Mon Sep 09, 2013 11:38 am ---- Got a big problem on my gti 180, whilst trying to remove rear wheel found locking bolt done up far too tight. Its the type with 4 small round pins and managed to damage the locking nut whilst putting pressure on it. Tried a few guys I know locally all with no luck and eventually the head of the bolt snapped off in the wheel.
Anyone know how to get this out or know any businesses in Leicester area who could help?
#2: Re: Broken locking wheel nut on gti alloy Author: kandlbarrett, Location: SwindonPosted: Mon Sep 09, 2013 11:54 am ---- Have you tried the removal type tools as sold by Halfords and other car parts shops? they do need some nut to purcase on and won't work on locking nuts where the outer part of the nut can spin freely but they do work in all other cases.
I have removed locking nuts using these or, when desperate, driving on a slightly smaller socket by hiting it with a hammer (using my cheap socket set) and then undoing the bolt.

You need a drill and a cobalt drill bit and you need drill out the remaining bolt head. Size 10 then to size 12. Drilling alone will take about An hour!

As long as you don't snap the easy out while trying to remove the remains of the broken locking bolt is will be fine.
Stick a picture up of the bolt first before you attack it with tools as there may be a better way of tackling the problem.

#9: Re: Broken locking wheel nut on gti alloy Author: marv88, Location: aldeburgh suffolkPosted: Sat Sep 14, 2013 12:23 pm ---- i had had this problem when changing my rear axle coudlnt get bolt off as the end was mashed it wouldnt weld either nothing would stick in the end i drilled it out which was easy just make sure you start dead centre. 3 drill bits was all that was needed a 3,6 and 10 then used an extraction tool which is just an oppsite thread came out piece of cake.
