#1: gti180 not starting! Author: markwhittington9, Location: herts PostPosted: Tue Nov 05, 2013 2:15 pm

I've had a good look around and cant seem to find any similar problems but am hoping one of you guys/girls on here can help me,

so the story is,

car stood for 3months - occasionally started to keep battery charged etc,
put car back on the road Thursday night,
used for two short journeys Thursday night and Friday morning (under 3 miles)
used Saturday morning for approx 12 miles, same again in the afternoon.
used Saturday evening got 1/2 mile down the road, put my foot down got to 6000rpm and it cut out, no coughing or rough running just turned off!
not been able to restart it since,
only DTC present was p0341 - cam sensor
have checked spark - fuel - compression all good!
new plugs fitted - left plugs out to dry cylinders from excess fuel
replaced cam sensor
changed coil pack with spare i had laying around
removed vvt solenoid - cant see anything obvious but not sure what it should look like!
engine tries to start it seems like its going to everytime you try

so i'm out of ideas only thing i'm left thinking is has the timing belt skipped a couple teeth? both cams turn together, belt is tight (have only pulled top cover back) they don't look to be out of line, would just a couple teeth out stop it starting or just make it run rough?!

HELP lol

I guess you answered your own questions, since every thing you checked is good, that leaves us with the chance of a skipped teeth in timing belt which makes the car not able to start.

i take it you have checked all the fuses ?? i only ask as its not a easy jobs to do a cambelt on a 180 so check all the silly easy things first.

i guessed you would have but you never know mate, only other thing i could think to try is see if it will start with easy start in the air inlet ok i don't reallt like the stuff but if it did start even for a few seconds you would know if its the timeing or not and tbh if the belt has slipped i doubt it would do any more damage

its weird because all compression's are good so i'm guessing no valve damage etc but it literally starts for a second and dies!

have you checked the fuel is getting to the injectors ??? or taken the fuel supply off from the fuel rail and seen if it comeing up from the tank all ok

#9: Re: gti180 not starting! Author: markwhittington9, Location: herts PostPosted: Tue Nov 05, 2013 4:42 pm
    ----
yeah took fuel pipe off rail and it pumps out loads while cranking, plugs and pistons were wet too so its definitely getting fuel

HMM tbh i'm runing out of ideas i just feel that its unlikely to be belt slipped ok i know its possable but as you say with good compression it seems unlikely to me. as said you could try easy start as a last ditch attempt

Yeh true it's a shame you reckon you'll fix it if it's k-od the head?

114k wow she's done well! I got it on 30 odd from Car giant in 04 or 5 lol.

i really dont think it's done the head everything seems not that bad, its literally trying to start it's so close! pretty sure i bought on about 52k, had a cambelt and 2 clutches since then!

#17: Re: gti180 not starting! Author: JamieM PostPosted: Wed Nov 06, 2013 4:14 am

Hopefully it isn't the head then Smile

I'm not sure if I'd keep trying to start it though incase it is the belt and it ends up causing more damage but I'm not a mechanic.

Yeh think you picked it up on around 55k I part x'd it at gates on 54, well I hope you can get it sorted mate good luck!

Can you write your compression readings with full throttle?

#19: Re: gti180 not starting! Author: markwhittington9, Location: herts PostPosted: Fri Nov 08, 2013 2:14 pm

They were all 165psi and above, not on full throttle and with a dieing battery! (I just wanted to make sure no cylinders were on 0!!)

Sounds like the timing is out. Might be worth taking the belt cover off and physically checking.

So due to time and weather etc etc the belt still isn't off! It looks like the timing is out as I can't make the exhaust and inlet cam timing ion holes match up (turning engine over by hand) I've read several stories about bent and damaged valves on these engines, anyone know what the compression should be? Mine read 165psi plus on each cylinder with a dieing battery! Fingers crossed this mean no bent valves or is that low?!

165 is not bad really if the timeing is out, i wouldnt expect you to have damaged anythign if its only 2 or 3 teeth out. if there is no matalic noises that is.
