clutch thrust bearing or low gear box oil - NEW USER

#1: clutch thrust bearing or low gear box oil - NEW USER Author: jk003, Location: darlington PostPosted: Tue Dec 31, 2013 1:59 pm

i apologize if this has been asked before, my 206 1.4 hdi (2007) started what appeared to be similar sounding to a thrust bearing related noise, however it continues whether the clutch is pressed OR not. It is worse after the car has warmed up and as i am coming to a stop with the clutch down. i am only confused as if it were the clutch i thought it would only make the noise if the pedal was pressed? the car is at 60,000 miles and due to go in for a service in a week or so. i am also aware that there can be a noise if the gearbox oil level was low. do you have any thoughts on this? i have found several topics relating to a clutch noise but no mention of when the clutch pedal is up with the engine running. PLEASE help i love my 206 but being a student need to keep the repair costs down!

the noise is very similar to this video, with maybe a slightly higher pitched noise no matter what position the clutch pedal is in, though it is worse down.

it might also be worth mentioning 3 or 4 times in the last month it felt as if i was wheel spinning everytime i pulled onto a roundabout from standstill and i am no boy racer by any means. the last time it felt like the car was jumping?

To me it sounds like you clutch needs replacing. i would also put fresh oil in when changing it. the car is at 60000 miles so the clutch is due anyway

thanks for the reply! yeah it was even worse going to work today. i may be being daft but to me the whole car just feels different to drive. i have a mechanic friend who is giving it a good service this weekend, i will get the clutch done but also change the gearbox oil as well and hopefully it will be back to its old self. i wonder if the car heard me telling friends i want to swap it for a 207 this next year....

if it doesn't solve you problems then it will be transmission issues, then it gets expensive.

Good Luck!!

Clutch is due at 60,000 miles? Ha ha never heard anything so ridiculous, clutch life is dependant on how its used not mileage.
The noise could be clutch related or possibly input shaft in the gearbox, i would say more likely the clutch is at fault from the rest of the symptoms you've described though.
If you replace the clutch get a decent kit such as Valeo etc.

yeah my neighbour is ace with cars. this is my second 206, the earlier one was a 1.1 petrol and everything that could go did on that car. i had the headgasket done for £200. the only other clue i had today was a burning smell coming from the front while i was pulling away from a junction. will have alook for valeo kit, all i can seem to find at the minute is LUK? never heard of them.

Clutch slip ... sounds like you are spinning wheels but it's actually not putting power through ... engine speeds up but you don't. Clutch is probably going to fail pretty soon ...

yeah i've decided not to drive it now until it is done. thankfully im not at work/uni till next week by which time this "should" be done. is it usual for thi to happen at only 60,000? i bought the car at 50,000 with only an older man who had it before me. and as i have said before i am very careful using the clutch etc.

A clutch can fail with age as well as use.

well good news it seems, after 40 mile motorway stretches to and from uni the noise has totally gone! the car isnt in for its service/cambelt change till saturday, at which point it will be looked at properly. the mechanic initially said he wasn't 100% it was clutch related and even more unsure of gearbox problems, though i will get the oil changed while the car is in.

i'm obviously now just a little confused as to what the noise may have been :s for now at least i'm just happy it doesnt seem to be clutch related...
