#1: Car is chugging? NEED HELP URGENT Author: SamNI96 PostPosted: Thu Jan 16, 2014 9:43 am

Alright guys,

Bit of a car noob so I am. A few weeks ago my car started chugging. Like rocking when it was stationary in every gear inc neutral. Also, at the same time, the engine started to make a really loud air-filter type noise as the revs went past 3000. It wasn't much different to what it usually is, but I'm certain it was louder. Also, the exhaust seemed to be shaking a bit and I'll post a link to a youtube video I took of the exhaust. It literally was like a Spitfire the way it was spitting out the carbon monoxide. Put put put put put! I'm also pretty certain that the engine lost some power. Didn't seem as fast as it was two or three days ago!

Last time it done that, my mate cleaned the spark plugs and it seemed to be fine again. He said they might've got wet. It's happened again though. Is it the spark plugs? If not, what is this? How do I fix this? How much will it cost? All fairly obvious questions. I thought it might've been the exhaust but maybe I'm way off and that's a seperate problem? I don't know.

Cheers lads,
Sam

Try changing the spark plugs for Bosch ones first, and see if that rectifies it.
Otherwise I'd guess and say it could be the coil pack

A quick google seems to insinuate that the problem could be the coil pack, the spark plugs or one/more of the fuel injectors

Right just taken the spark plugs out, wiped over them, set them to 0.9mm and absolutely nothing has changed. They're Bosch ones. Furious that I've only passed my test a week and already this bloody piece of sh*t has broken down.

How much is a coil pack going to set me back?

What car is it? 1.1 / 1.4 8/16v?

All's not lost then. Just annoying. 1 week and it's already gone tits up on me ffs. Had hoped to drive my mates and I down to the football on Saturday but what d'ya know, the Frenchies manage to f**k my plans up even though they built it 10 years ago.

Find someone with a code reader and check to see if any codes are stored or if it's showing any imminent problems. Rules out the possibility of it being something else. Normally you would expect the EML to be on, but you can never be 100% certasin that it's working properly.

Have you done anything to the car recently eg electrical, engine work etc

Code reader is next option, one of my Mum's friends has one.

Nothing. Literally zilch.

When you took the plugs out were they all the same colour (normal) and dry?

All looked OK same colour and not that much wear but might make a wee investment in new ones. Wouldn't cost much, surely?

If you are doing a code read I would ignore the existing codes (unless they have a date that they occured) clear them and start again. Fault finding from codes that could now be a few months or even years old could be wasting time.

Also check that there aren't any exhaust leaks or air intake leaks.

Personally I would get a knowledgeable mate to check it over as fault finding by replacing components gets expensive and is a waste of money if you don't get the right parts to fix the problem.

I've a six month warranty with my garage so I'm going to take it to them in the morning. Phoned them an hour ago or so and he said that they'd cover it.

Problem solved. I hope.

Just back from the garage. Had to leave the pug there. Useless thing has a broken fuel injector.

Going German from now on I think.
