#1: Broken bolt for rocker cover Author: BenniBoi90, Posted: Mon Mar 24, 2014 12:37 pm ---- My dad purchased a 206 yesterday which had an oil leak. After investigating & getting advice from here we saw the leak was coming from te rocker cover gasket. When it came to unbolting the cover I put the socket on the left hand bolt & without even moving it the bolt fell off as it has sheerd. The previous owner must have over tightened it.
What is like to know is can I just buy the block that the bolt comes from? If I can then ill get one from the breakers, if not I'm not sure what I'll be able to do
Any advice would be much appreciated

Would recommend replacing both for your own peace of mind in case it happens with the other.
Also let us know what engine you have, someone will more then likely be able to provide you with the correct part number too in the event you choose to purchase online

Sounds like whoever has had it of before in the past was hamfisted

#6: Re: Broken bolt for rocker cover Author: kandlbarrett, Location: SwindonPosted: Tue Mar 25, 2014 10:02 am ---- get a Haynes manual, not perfect but good for simple jobs and fgives all the correct torque settings, check the correct torque and then buy a suitable torque wrench. These bolts should only be a little more than finger tight. Can't recall the exact torque but it isn't much.

A torque wrench on rocker cover bolts is OTT.

Using a torque wrench a few times at the different torques is also a good way to get the idea of what the differing torques "feel" like. The opposite is also true, I can do 70 - 80ft.lbs quite easily by feel but some of the 7st wet rag apprentices are so weak they really struggle to achieve that so being at or beyond their strength makes a torque wrench essential.
For the rocker cover it is especially true that a wrench shouldn't be necessary especially as they are steel bolts. Learning "feel" is far more important when it is a small steel bolt into aluminium.
Finally, I used to make all my apprentices and trainees use torque wrenches for at least the first 6 months. It ingrains the "feel" for both the 7st weaklings and the gym going steroid takers.

I see your point with a torque wrench actually as I used to work in a bowling alley with a hamfisted clown who always over tightened bolts
