My wife has a 206 1.4 Auto (2000 reg) which over the past couple of days we have had a problem with, im hoping someone can point me in the right direction.
When putting the key in the ignition all the dash comes up as normal, as you then proceed to turn the key as if to start, the electrics cut completely.
This first happened on one night in the week and after sitting for a couple of minutes, my wife opened the drivers door, shut it behind her and after a beep everything came back on and we drove home ok.
This was then ok for a couple of days and did it again yesterday, same thing, opening and closing the drivers door seemed to spark it back to life.
I am ok (ish) with cars so had a good look this morning and cant seem to get to the bottom of it. I have:
replaced car battery (for good measure as I didnt know how old this one was)
checked earthing cable from neg terminal to gearbox housing - looks fine
checked all the fuses for any that are dud - all look ok
replaced battery in key fob
so everything seemed to be ok, then this evening its done it again so im stumped.
The only known problem we have had with the car is the usual lock/unlock which started a couple of months ago and is on my "to do" list at some point
It looked like the positive terminal connector was loose on the old battery and didnt really fit snug on the new battery so I have used a small strip of copper to fit tight, though I dont understand how that could have just got loose (im also not sure how to change this considering the type of connector used as OE fit)
Any further ideas would be a great help!

#3: Re: Electrics cut when turning key Author: DREWDEN, Location: huddersfieldPosted: Sun Apr 20, 2014 5:54 am ---- I have had this problem before, it was a loose (broken) connector in the BSI unit, (fuse box) under the steering wheel, a small grey one if i remember rightly.
Opening and shutting the drivers door could be vibrating a loose connection, check all connections.

I discounted starter motor but I suppose it could be, it starts fine most of the time its just these odd times the electrics cut.
I did undo the earth on gearbox housing, visually checked it (as ive seen people claim they have split/frayed etc) and cleaned the connection and also smeared the connection piece with copperslip grease before fixing it back
I am starting to think it must be the battery terminal that kept looking loose, it seemed loose on both batteries so i have no idea how that could have just suddenly happened. I think ill see if i can get a new terminal clamp in the week and do that next week as the bit of metal against the terminal is only a temporary bodge at the moment.
I will in the meantime check that fusebox again tomorrow as I suppose it could make sense that slamming the door is causing something to vibrate in there. The fuses all look ok but I can just take them out one by one and put them back incase something has come loose

You may have created your own problem.
The surface should be grease free. Metal to metal contact is always better, and nothing wrong with putting grease over the connection once the bolt is in and tight.
I'd clean up this connection and then go from there. The grease could be acting as an insulator on the connection and restricting the current flow.
